Set in an array of Victorian rowhouses, Sassafraz has evolved through the decades to become a magical space in the heart of historic Yorkville. Located at the corner of Bellair and Cumberland, the little house has "seen it all" from the early hippie movement of the 60"s to the lack of movement that comes from too much Bordeaux. Sassafraz offers an exceptional menu serving market-driven, French-inspired Canadian cuisine.

Sassafraz never disappoints. We make a point of going when we visit Toronto now that we have moved to Windsor. We tried the Summer set meal for once in my dining experience I could find something from each course that I like. We had AMAZING cocktails to start these are obviously made with taste in mind the same as the food! I had the Duck pate which was probably the best I have ever tasted and wished I could take a big pot home! My husband had Halibut as a main and was overwhelmed with the way it had been prepared in fact he compared it to a sea bass that he once ate in Paris. My strip loin was perfectly cooked beautifully seared flavor. We will be longing for a meal such as this until we get to Toronto again unfortunately Windsor does not have many fine dining experiences for us as we would like.

I went there for my bachelorette party and it was a great experience. The service was great, they even helped my friend setup the party balloons. The food was great, we got the summerlicious menu items. For the desert, the flourless chocolate bar was the best dessert I have ever had, super delicious! The ambience and the interior of the restaurant was beautiful and romantic. Overall, my girlfriends and I enjoyed our dinner and had a great time.

I was not happy with the saffron chicken served as part of summerlicious. It tasted weird.

Food not cooked nor presented well. Wait staff is very impersonal. So many other places to go to in the area that provide better value.

Overall experience was good but the premise was really noisy that I could hardly hear my dinner companion. The peach non alcoholic cocktail was bland.

Our lunch reservation table was ready on time & they located us in a preferred area as requested. ambience by the waterfall is lovely. Staff are efficient , friendly & professional yet unobtrusive. No pressure to turnover the table for the next guest within 2hours or to order alcohol. Love the skylight-filled sunny atrium by the waterfall! Had The Summerlicious menu & the trout was pan-fried to perfection with extra crispy skin but tender meat. Marinated Thai short ribs were excellent altho wish there were more on our appetizer plate! Lol. Strawberry panacotta also very good . All for only $28. +tax+tip. It was a very enjoyable & relaxing luncheon! If only the drive back home at rush hour could’ve been less stressful we’d go more often!

We requested to be seated in the coolest area as the day was hot and humid. Loved sitting in the atrium next to the waterfall and living wall. This also turned out to be the quietest area as we noticed the other spaces were very noisy on our way out.
Service was excellent. Explained our time constraint and we were served in a timely manner.
My friend had the Caesar salad and I had the short ribs. The salad had a nice light dressing and the mango slaw that accompanied the ribs was very tasty.
I ordered the burger and fries, and like many other reviewers, was very pleased with this choice. The quality of the meat was excellent and the onion chutney delicious.
My friend enjoyed the roast chicken breast.
We both had the flourless chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. Perfect blueberries in coulis were on the side. The combination was magical.
Hope to return soon.

Apparently, they were short handed and no one knew who our waiter was. So we sat for a half hour without service. Even the the entree was very late . Good was very good though.

This restaurant has in the past been one of our favourites. However, we were all hoarse trying to Two portions were highly salted (i.e., soup, noodles) - I guess salt was necessary for flavor? Not sure if we will return. The service was excellent.

Our party of four went to Sassafraz for Summerlicious. There was lots to choose from on the menu. I had the Caesar salad with crispy Romaine lettuce, thin shavings of Parmesan and anchovies. The entree was Salmon with soba noodles. The salmon was perfectly cooked and the serving of soba noodles just the right amount in a tasty Ponzu dressing. For dessert I chose the flourless chocolate cake served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. A perfect meal. My companions had the burgers, which they found very filling and the cheese tray for dessert. Our fourth diner had the Heirloom tomatoes with white beans, the chicken breast and the strawberry Panna Cotta. We each had a Fuzzy Peach drink. Outstanding value for the quality of the meal! Service was also very good. Definitely would recommend Sassafraz!

We had a wonderful summerlicious lunch here. The service was great, very attentive even though it was busy, the food was excellent, wine pairing suggestion was also on point. We sat inside at the back by the waterwall and it was gorgeous with the tall skylight ceilings. Americano coffee was way too bitter for me, but they got me something else, so really, I have zero to complain about. Will be back, have already recommended it twice.

The summerlicious was pretty forgettable (Agnolotti was cold and tasted like it came out of the freezer) but the service and ambiance was great. The dessert course was very good.

Chose the prix fixed menu. Salad? Okay. Didn’t much like my pasta dish, but my friend’s hamburger looked good. Didn’t realize the peas would be mushed in a quite revolting sauce. The stuffed pasta was otherwise quite good.
Dessert (the panna cotta) was tasteless and didn’t wobble like it should. Server was good.

I ordered the pork chop on the Summerlicious menu and the meat was tough. I am disappointed in this and want to know how Sassafraz can rectify this negative customer experience for me.
Thank you.

Went to Sassafraz for the first time for Summerlicious lunch. The ambiance is lovely for lunch, with sun streaming in the covered garden section with waterfall. The food and service could not be faulted ... everything was delicious. At Sunmerlicious prices, this is a real bargain.

We went for the summerlicious menu which was delicious. We sat near the waterfall under the sun roof - it was beautiful! All the food was delicious and was served in a timely spaced manner. We definitely left the restaurant feeling full. The hostess, the waiter, the bus boy - everyone was so friendly and helpful throughout our time at the restaurant.

We enjoyed our evening. The waitress we had was one of the best we have ever had! She made the meal fun and enjoyable. It was summerlicious which sometimes means get in and out as quickly as possible. We did not feel rushed and the restaurant had more choices than most for this type of meal.
Highly recommended.

My partner and I enjoyed a meal at this establishment a couple of nights ago. The ricotta agnolotti with lemon, asparagus and peas was outstanding as were the other samplings we enjoyed. The dessert of strawberry panna cotta was a bit bland, but to be fair, panna cotta tends to be a bit bland at the best of times. I would certainly go back especially if spending time in the Yorkville area.

We dined for Summerlicious, and had a wonderful experience! We didn’t feel that the restaurant gave smaller than usual portions, as many other restaurants do. We had the ceviche and ribs as an appetizer, the steak for the main, and the chocolate bar and Pannacota for dessert. All were delicious. Service was great too, as was the ambience. We will be back!

The restaurant ambience is welcoming and lively. The Summerlicious menu was tasty and contained a very good selection of food. The beef short ribs appetizer was tasty along with the Halibut entrée. Dessert was the decadent chocolate bar. Overall, it was a great experience and would recommend Sassafraz as a place to dine in Yorkville!!!!

The salmon was overcooked and dry. The soba noodles were in a soy sauce that was too salty and heavy which clashed with the rest of the dish. A lighter shoyu sauce would've been a better choice for the soba.
