Sunday brunch options are great but they had no champagne for mimosas. Very odd since I’m sure that’s a money maker. Something about not getting their shipment. They could’ve gotten really inexpensive bubbly locally. Big misstep!

I just didn't think it was all that. I ordered the lamb burger, which was incredibly under-seasoned from their brunch menu. My friend seemed to enjoy her meal, but had to first send it back because it came out cold initially. My fries were cold, but I was too hungry to have it sent back. Not blaming our waiter, but he appeared to have a running nose - that kind of thing doesn't put you in the mood for eating. They have a lot of potential and can certainly improve. Hoping that is the case. I wish them well.

Maybe this was an off night but boy it was a rough experience. We were seated and the waiter didn't speak to us for 30 minutes. We just sat there. I had to walk to the bar to order a drink. Once we finally were served it was inconsistent service at best. The serve forgot condiments we requested after our food came and brought us the bill with no bill in the folder. Granted he had a large table with 10 people but we were neglected and were never given the obligatory sorry I'm slammed. The food was good but $16 for a burger was not worth the money.

We checked this out on a Saturday night (after moving to the neighborhood) with friends who were in town for MCM 10K. Steel Plate doesn't look like much from the outside (and you might miss it, if you aren't paying attention), but inside it's cozy and has a nice vibe. We sat on the rooftop deck/patio and it had a really nice ambience. They have a very unique menu! We ordered all 3 mushroom appetizers and they were good; the empenadas were the best of the 3. 2 friends ordered the bison burger, which both came a more undercooked for what they preferred, but they still liked it. The other friend ordered the regular burger, which was cooked to her order. I ordered the spaghetti squash pad thai with shrimp. I thought it was exactly as described - spaghetti squash instead of noodles - but it was just squash mixed in with noodles. It would have been more interesting to have just spaghetti so it wasn't like every other pad thai, but it was still good & just the right amount of spice. My friends ordered the caramel gelatto for dessert & thought it was amazing. We all got different beers - they have a very good selection! The servers were all very friendly & accommodating, and the music was great, which added to the nice neighborhood feel. We will definitely go back to try other dishes.

I wasn't too certain what to expect as some reviews were mixed. But we were so glad we gave it a try. What a great menu! We wanted to try it all. The food didn't disappoint. It was well executed. Very tasty updated southern comfort food. The restaurant/bar filled up quickly, but our server and the host/bartender kept everything moving along. Our waiter was very helpful with beer and dessert selections too. I'm thinking about returning very soon for some of that mac and cheese!

It was odd, with a very creative menu and well-cooked presentations, all of the flavors were a little dull. Most of the offerings were just below where you would think the flavor would come through. Nothing popped. That being said, I still love the creativity in the menu selection and will return to try it again for that reason alone. That and the ginger, margarita.

Dropped in after a lecture on DC's trees at the Smithsonian Ripley Center. Got a nice table in a quiet section and had a tasty meal. She was delighted that everything we ordered was available. On an earlier visit, soon after Steel Plate opened, the menu's promise exceeded the kitchen's capacity. We would return to Steel Plate more often but catching a taxicab there is difficult.

Nice atmosphere and good food at reasonable prices. The cauliflower grits were very tasty and my husband had a wonderful grilled cheese sandwich with onions and bacon. The kale salad (even if you think you are getting tired of kale salads) is very good - of course bacon can make almost anything good -- and the meatballs were flavorful, too.

The whole experience was mediocre. The drinks were good but the food was just bad. There weren't many great options--we had a lot of trouble even deciding what to get. We ordered a few small plates to share and a main. Like any amateur restaurant, all of the food came out at once. The qofte was good, as well as the onion rings, but the wild boar crostini was nothing exciting. But the main dish, lamb and couscous, was terrible. Very fatty and overlooked. Definitely not a place I'd go back to or recommend!

Really wanted to like this neighborhood restaurant. For dining we were 1 of 2 tables ordering an early dinner. Service was slow, but food was good. Nats game was on at the bar but noise did not interfere with our dining. Disappointed as we celebrated parents anniversary. They could not offer anything to mark the occasion.

Considering I live in Brookland, I was hoping that my first visit here would be positive, but I don't imagine that I will make this a frequent stop for dining. It was very loud even though it wasn't that crowded. The food was average at best and small portions. The cocktails were made with so much ice that you basically didn't get much bang for your buck.

The staff were very helpful substituting a different wine for the one that they were out of on the menu; they courteously dealt with my idiosyncratic request to pay for it before my dining companions arrived. The food was tasty, but my lamb sandwich had 3 different temperatures. And the tables were sticky.

Came in with a friend for a simple Sunday dinner. Our server was wholly overwhelmed, and clearly the only one working the tables. He successfully mastered the "don't make eye contact" move after he delivered our beers. We even tried to wave him over two times; not a single glance up. It was >25 minutes before we got him back to put in our food order. Our quick and simple dinner turned into a 2 hour affair, way longer than intended. The food was tasty and well prepared. I would come back for the food, but sit at the bar for better service.

I love Steel Plate. It's become my new favorite dining spot in the DC area. I've had the duck tacos, and fell in love with the Doro Wat wings seasoned with ethiopian spice. It's meant as an starter but I've paired it with the Bacon Kale salad as my meal. This is the place to go if you like wild game meats like rabbit, lamb and boar. I can't wait to try their bison and shrimp burgers and spicy octopus stir fry. The space is small and homey. There's an upstairs, but I haven't been up there yet. The bar seems friendly with locals and frequent patrons. The bartender made me an awesome sangria that was not on the menu.

We were very disappointed with the recent change at Steel Plate. While the service provided by the young lady was great, the octopus pot pie was supper disappointing, certainly not worth the $12 we paid for it. But never mind that. We have been coming regularly to Steel Plate since it first opened for gatherings with various friends, sometimes making them travel from VA, but our last visit was different. The atmosphere was much more a sports bar than the Dining Saloon we can to love. The music was SO LOUD that it drove everyone to be louder, especially the bar patrons, making the conversation part of our dining experience moot. Please, fix this. Otherwise we will miss a beloved hangout choice.

The first experience for our group of 4 was impressive. The neighborhood setting and dark, rustic decor belie a more polished product. We had a light meal. Of the two starters, the lentil/scallop combination was deliciously creative while the risotto was good but less distinctive. The duck tacos, lamb sandwich, and bourguignon burger were all carefully cooked and presented--and eagerly devoured. Portions were right-sized. For diversion from the more central DC restaurants or when we are drawn to the happenings of the Brookland area, we'll go back for more.

This restaurant was lacking in terms of both food quality and service. Our waiter was forgetful and inattentive, neglecting to bring drinks we ordered and visiting the table rarely. This would be forgivable if the restaurant was busy, but it was pretty slow. The food was not good either. I got the duck tacos, and there was very little duck. My wife ordered a burger and what she got looked like a charcoal briquette. Not good at all, which is a shame because it looks like a great place and would be a nice Brookland gem if the restaurant were better.

I was glad to find to a new spot in Brookland. My father ran into friends who had used office space there. So the exposed structure and duct work and tables and bar made from reclaimed materials informed the place's past lives. We were able to get a table on the first floor for one of us who uses a walker. Our table was below a speaker which had an occasionally loud rock music pump out of it but we we able to converse. We had Catfish with Congolese Sauce and Peanut Garlic Kale and Pan Roasted Chicken with Polenta and Carrots. Both dishes were nicely plated and tasty. The surprises were that the chicken was sliced and draped over the sides and the marriage of peanuts with the kale. My cousin and I shared a slice of chocolate cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Even with good food and football games on the screens over the bar, I thought more people would be there on a Sunday evening. I'll check out the place again, maybe even on another day for the scene as well as the food.
