Tar & Roses
With our heart beating in Southern California, we want to create a welcoming ambiance for all to come and celebrate food. Jonathan Gold of the Los Angeles Times, claimed that Tar & Roses "...may also mark the first time in our nation's history when cauliflower became more delicious than prime steak," and we love to push the limits when it comes to traditional ideas of food. With our rotating selection of local craft beer and our ever-changing menu, there is always something new and exciting to try.
When you step into Tar & Roses, you'll feel like you are coming home. We invite you to come share a meal with us.

I’ve been wanting to try this place for YEARS (we don’t get to Santa Monica that often), and I wish I had tried harder to get here sooner. We had such a fabulous meal! The roasted English peas were so lovely, I was sort of wishing we’d gotten 2 orders instead of one for 4 people and made a mental note to order my own, next time. And the mushroom toast was also delectable! Again, shared between 4 people — we should have ordered two, but then we might not have had room for the incredible strawberry-thyme tart (I can’t think of the actual name but it was first on the dessert list). I’m on a restricted diet at the moment so I chose the roasted half- chicken which was done to perfection and quite flavorful! My companions raves about the spaghetti carbonara and the venison. The service was impeccable and the atmosphere is chic yet still inviting. Looking forward to our next visit when I can be a little more adventurous with my ordering!
Agree with other reviewers, the oxtail dumplings were truly a marvel. We also had the sunchokes which were great. Our server, Katie was awesome and made a good wine recommendation. Service was attentive but unobtrusive, and I love the communal dining atmosphere, makes everything more festive. For main courses my friend had venison which was tender and tasty, and my hangar steak was flavorful. I was less crazy about the potato gratin (a little cool when it arrived), but I may have just been full from the charcuterie, dumplings, and sunchokes by that time... :)
From Florida ....but love the restaurant!
Incredible meal, super friendly service, delicious wine. Would 100% go back and bring more friends and family.
Popular Restaurant @ Santa Monica. Ordered Oxtail Dumplings , King Trumpet Mushrooms , Singaporean Chilli Crab Cake , Bone Marrow , Shellfish Pot + Strawberry Ricotta Crostata. A Good Dinner Experience.
Very good food, ambiance and service. We had the steak and seafood pasta, both were excellent. A bit disappointed in the size of the grilled octopus appetizer.
Not the 1st time I have eaten here and am so happy I went back as I liked it a lot the 1st time but loved it this time. The food was on point and service was even better. Whether it’s every day dining or a special occasion put Tar and Roses on the short list of go to places.
This is by far the best restaurant in the area and frankly our CONSISTENT go to for celebration nights or to bring visitors! Service and food are always perfect.
My husband and I wanted our last meal during our Thanksgiving trip to California to be somewhere special, and we were so glad we chose Tar & Roses for dinner. The space is beautiful, the service was excellent, and our food was amazing. We chose a total of five items from the Snacks, Smalls, and Veggies menus to share and were impressed with both the presentation and the flavors of each dish. We highly recommend this restaurant, and hope to visit again sometime in the future.
Once again we had a great time at T&R. The staff is very friendly and the food is amazing. Looking forward to trying the 3 course next time we reserve.
Great place! Food was awesome! Staff very helpful and friendly. Went with our 8, 12, and 14 year olds and they too are very well!
Amazing food and great service. I was not happy with our table by the front door, so we were promptly moved to a more comfortable location.
The food is incredible. Had the dumplings, which lived up to their reputation,. We shared the chicken which was delicious, especially for chicken! And do not skip dessert!
We had 7 different "small plates", and I wish we had a couple more people in our party so that we could have tried one of everything! Not a bad bite, but the outstanding dishes were the braised short rib dumplings, and the gnocchi.
Great Service! Amazing seating host and waiter. Food was delicious
Always good: service, food, and ambience. The menu hasn’t changed much in years, which could make regulars wanting more.
A really great meal. Could have been improved by a more relaxed pace between courses.
Met a girlfriend here for catch up drinks and a smattering of appetizers. The burrata / prosciutto and persimmon salad was mouth watering and I wish I could have a bite of that (and the bone marrow) every day for the rest of my life. Prices are pretty typical of Santa Monica / Los Angeles, 1 cup of bacon sautéed Brussel sprouts for $13. Had a lovely waitress that was very knowledgable on the wine list (only wine and beer here, folks). Will absolutely go back to test out the larger plates.
The food was exceptional. The variety was wonderful. Our female server whose name I don’t recall was the BEST server ever. That is saying a lot since there were two x-servers at the table and we are very particular. Our reservation was under “Barbara” at 7pm on 11/18 if that helps identify our server. She paired our food well with wine and she planned the arrival of our various food choices superbly. Highly recommend the restaurant!
The most delicious seafood stew with Thai seasonings. Bone marrow was silken and divine
Birthday dinner with our daughter. Food was delicious. Seated next to kitchen with shouted orders. Not the most pleasant for an early dinner reservation. Hostess not particularly welcoming. Waitress was amazing! Again, Food was delicious.
The prime rib steak we ordered for two was not as great I expect it, the flavor was bland and about a fourth of the steak was fat. The other dishes were great, but I was disappointed with our main dish selection.
Great restaurant - the food was delicious! A little pricy, but, with every penny :)
Our waitress was amazing also.
Absolutely excellent, great service with a really informative waiter. The food was outstanding with great different tastes and takes on traditional dishes..... we loved it
Always a great experience at Tar & Roses. Food was yummy as usual but the service was exceptional. Never rushed us, great table, always attentive to our needs - this really allowed us to really enjoy the ambiance and each other.
Incredible food, great wine and the highlight was our amazing server
Visited Tar & Roses for a birthday dinner. Our booking was at 7.30pm however we weren't seated till 8.00pm and the waiting area is narrow you feel like you have been put in the naughty corner.
The waitress recommended the steak which was tough, chewy and tasteless. The ambience of the place was nice and the dessert was amazing . I wouldn't rush to go back and would probably rate it a 4 out of 10 as prices are quite steep as well.
We were seated about 15 minutes late for our 9 PM reservation, but the hostess communicated with us while we waited and mentioned they would be bringing a complementary snack to our table when we were seated. Good communication and a small gesture like that goes a long way to making the customer happy. We started off with the oxtail dumplings and glazed ribs as appetizers and both were outstanding. The fried snapper for two with sweet & sour dipping sauce is a stand out and one of the best dishes I've had anywhere. The fish was quite large and plenty for two people to share and at $69.00 was a fair price.
We've been to Tar & Roses several times and the food and service never disappoint!
I was never big on sharing, but "small plates" doesn't get much better than Tar & Roses.
The food at Tar & Roses was outstanding - great flavors, well prepared, and nicely presented. The only caution I will give is that it is not inexpensive. That also extends to the wine list where a few bottles are less than $100, but most are over that. I will go back, but limited to special occasions.
The food at Tar & Roses is always delicious. Started with the English peas, Lemon Ricotta Gnocchi, and the Miso Glazed Eggplant - all fantastic. Then on to the Chanterelle Mushroom Toast and the Fried Cauliflower and the Branzino - loved them all. Finished with an amazing cheese plate. Wonderful meal and the service was perfect. It's a little on the loud side, but hard to find a restaurant that isn't.
Delicious food and great service! Seated in the rear patio area. Lovely! Got a bit noisy when it filled up with customers, but it was all in all a fantastic experience.
I always enjoy this place. The food is really good and inventive, the service is wonderful. It can be a little noisy but this is as close to perfect as anyone needs.
Fabulous food and service. Go early for quiet meal. Gets noisy when full
Amazing food and very, very friendly staff. We will be back!
Food was fantastic, we had the fish for two and it’s one of the best ever ,
Everything we ordered were delicious!! Definitely coming here again!
Great food and service. Just a tiny bit loud but would go back in a second!
The wine selection, cheese plate, venison and cauliflower were the standouts to me! Great meal and will definitely be back!
Good service, decent food, stupidly noisy though I choose the restaurant looking for a buzzy place as suggested. In fact it’s not buzzy it just has such loud music that we could hear the waitress or even talk.
I love a lively vibe but this was not ideal at all. Plus the view is just if the main road, nothing to look at at all if you are holiday and don’t want to watch traffic n shops.
