The Helmand Restaurant
A Baltimore classic! Food is consistently good. Highly recommended.
Everything was lovely. The food, the service, and ambience. The food was incredibly flavorful from the first bite to the last. No wonder they've been in business 30 years. Cannot wait to return!
Always great ambience and food.
First time there
Food was excellent
Helmand serves up consistently delicious fare in a cozy, elegant atmosphere at very reasonable prices
This a stunningly beautiful restaurant experience at a price that isn't too steep. The food is authentic and prepared skillfully. Servers are fast and professional. I am constantly amazed at how good the food and experience is here.
This restaurant is great. We've been many times over the years. The service is excellent. Variety of dishes to choose from all reasonably priced. Food comes quickly so if your looking to stay a while don't order too quickly. I like sitting in the main dining room. Get the Turkish coffee and afghan ice cream after dinner. We'll be back!
Very disappointed in food. Very bland compared to Afghan restaurants in other cities.
The Helmand continues to please as a great value in Afghan cuisine. Appetizers, soups, entrees and desserts are all delicious, with no drop-off in food quality or taste. We plan to introduce more of our extended family to this fined dining site and experience!
Service wasn't great, but loved the lamb kabob, pumpkin, and jala ice cream for dessert.
Food and service is always great. Most consistent restaurant in Baltimore.
The Helmand received great reviews online so we tried it during a recent visit to Baltimore. We were less than impressed. The appetizers were average and my wife's meal was underwhelming. My meal was OK. All in all, we were disappointed.
My family greatly enjoyed our trip to Helmand! We were seated quickly, clearly explained different items on the menu, and given time to consider the menu. The staff were attentive though we didn't need our water glasses refilled quite so frequently. The food came out very quickly
(Stew-style dishes and rice likely made in large batches) and was very flavorful. We look forward to coming back and exploring more of the menu!
The food has gone seriously downhill.
Love visiting this venerable spot every year at the holidays! Great atmosphere. Felt the food presentation was a little lackluster -- the delicious pumpkin appetizer was a little less than appetizing when it appeared -- but tasted good as usual. Service was slow. Even the entree dishes that we shared were a little haggard looking, and the flavor on the lamb cooked with apricots was less delicate than usual. Will definitely come back and hope for some improvement.
This was my first time eating Afghan food. Remarkably similar to many Indian dishes. Carefully prepared, everything was very good tasting with a masterful control of flavor. (Try the pumpkin with yogurt sauce as a appetiser.) Wine list is good. Prices are fair. Service is professional and courteous. My dinner companion was in seventh heaven. I will welcome my next meal there.
Delicious as always, a favorite in Baltimore with a nice atmosphere and amazing taste.
Excellent food and service. Both the regular and gluten-free dishes were a flavorful departure from typical American restaurant fare. Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable about menu options. When she made an error with the dessert, she promptly corrected it at no charge.
We have been eating at the Helmand since it opened. It is always wonderful!! Food is awesome and the staff very accommodating. I recommend this restaurant for anyone who enjoys eating great food. Deb
Once again, the Helmand delivered on its promise of a great night out. The food was fantastic. The service was impeccable. The evening... perfection. The Helmand is a must for a night out in Mount Vernon. I look forward to our next return evening there already.
Had a wonderful meal. Never rushed, so friends could catch up on life.
Had not been to Helmand for several years, but it was as warm and inviting as before. The Afghan cuisine was delicious and portions were generous. Excellent service. However, tables are quite close together and it can be awkward for both customers and servers to maneuver around the cozy space. We were there on a cold, rainy night but the restaurant was filled.
Food was very tasty and arrived promptly.
Pumpkin appetizer, lamb dishes, ice cream
We loved our experience at Helmand Restaurant. The food was delicious and the staff was attentive. The only reason we were not five stars all around was that the food came out so fast. We were not dawdling over our cocktails and appetizer, but our main dishes came out while we were still in the midle of them. We were among the early diners that evening, so I imagine the cooking staff was all ready to go and was cooking at a pace that would serve them well for the rest of the evening. This was a small inconvenience, and we would recommend Helmand highly to diverse diners.
I previously ate at The Helmand in Chicago in the late 80's and early 90's when I lived there and loved it. I always wanted to try the Baltimore Helmand since I moved to Washington 21 years ago. Finally, I got my chance this past weekend. The menu seems to be almost exactly the same as the Chicago one a generation ago. Still delicious and varied appetizers and entrees. The Aushak appetizer was superb and I loved my Lamb entree.
I have tried other Afghan restaurants in DC and they were never as good as the Helmand. I will say that the portions are quite generous for the entrees relative to the price, so plan accordingly when ordering. The ambiance of the dining rooms is quite relaxed and we enjoyed everything about our meal; food, service and setting.
I am in Baltimore frequently now and plan to be a Helmand regular, just as I was at its sister location 30 years ago.
By far the best Afghan cuisine in the Baltimore Area. I recommend it to all my friends visiting from out of town.
Consistently delicious. Zardalu Challow. Divine!
I've been here twice now. The food has always been amazing. They use interesting combinations that you wouldn't expect to go together, but do beautifully.
Great service fast and attentive food is authentic and delicious
It was lovey to find a lively neighborhood restaurant with plenty of vegetarian options. The food was quite good and the service excellent.
We have enjoyed Helmand dinners and Kabobi lunches for 30 years. During this visit, our party included visitors from Massachussetts, one with dietary restrictions. The Helmand dinner was everthing we hoped to show off about Baltimore: attractive space, casual attire, unpretentious and attentive service, and delicious food. The vegetarian choices were a cut above. My vegetarian dolma was nicely spiced, rich in flavor and photo worthy. The pumpkin with yoghurt appetizer and the fresh bread were also admired by everyong.
In terms of flavor per dollar, Helmand is Baltimore's best. Our one recurring complaint is that the stews come out of the kitchen within minutes of ordering. The customer needs to slow down the service to fully savor the superb meal.
Loved it!!! There’s a reason they’ve been around for so long!
My husband and I took my son to the Helmand to celebrate his 28th birthday. We enjoyed several appetizers and naan before dinner. We especially liked the pumpkin dish and the beef filled pastry dish. Already planning to return soon!
Always love the Helmand. The pumpkin dish is my fave!!
As always, the Helmand is probably my favorite restaurant. The food is exquisite and the staff is very professional and attentive.
The restaurant was as expected. I've been going here every few years for almost 20 years and take people to see it as a traditional Baltimore dining spot and example of Afghan cuisine. It's a bit pricey compared to the more casual Afghan restaurants in town and while some food is really good other dishes can be a bit underwhelming.
We were seated next to the partition adjacent to the kitchen. So noisy we could not have good conversation. Food okay.
I drive all the way from DC periodically to dine at The Helmand. I have loved every dish I have ever eaten there. A friend that I brought there with me for the first time commented how reasonable the prices are.
Excellent food as always. Lamb Kabobs made to perfection. Pumpkin appetizer was delicious. Service as always did not miss a beat. We always leave feeling we made the perfect choice dinner or lunch.
