The Helmand Restaurant
4 blocks from Penn Station
I have been going to The Helmand since it opened. I no longer live in Baltimore but whenever I am in Baltimore this is the restaurant that I always go back to and if I have friends with me this is my number one place to bring them. The food is not “spicy” but it contains wonderful spices that are unusual and that I don’t experience at other restaurants that serve Middle Eastern or Asian food. The pumpkin appetizer is unique and delicious. It is a must order—-sweet but covered with tart yogurt sauce. We really enjoy every single appetizer. I always order the chicken lawand, which contains large tender chunks of chicken breast and a tomato-based sauce with whole mushrooms. This time my friends ordered the steak with “Afghan spices” and it was incredibly tender and delicious. I think the steak dish was called “Chebedek.” Someone ordered the salmon which I’ve never had and that was great too. I’ve never had a bad dish at this restaurant. The bread they serve with butter is unique and I like to soak up the sauces from whatever dish I ordered. We made reservations early, at 6 o’clock, and the place was packed on a Saturday night.
Delicious food. Very flavorful. Our waiter Siddiq was outstanding. Great ambiance with wonderful service.
Great authentic experience which are hard to come by these days. I will definitely be back as there are so many dishes I wanted to try. Went for restaurant week but in general dishes are very affordable so decided to order off the regular menu. Highly recommend the roasted eggplant appetizer and the naan bread.
Excellent Food !!!! A little wait at the front for our table. We had reservation and the 5 to 10 minute wait was a little discouraging. However, once at our table service was excellent and food was sooooo GOOD!
So glad I found this place. Excellent flavors. Well prepped meats! Pumpkin appetizer was truly exceptional!
My two friends and I enjoyed a great dinner. I have taken several people there on a number of occasions and there has never been a disappointing meal.
Disappointing visit. Waiter was not very interested in us. Tried to get us to order family style, and when we didn’t, he was less than cordial. Food was not as good as we remembered. It was very noisy.
Place seemed worn-menus were soiled with dirty finger prints and stains, carpets dirty, could use a fresh coat of paint on the walls. Food average and not memorable. Didn’t learn anything about cuisine from the experience. Server seemed overwhelmed and had little time or interest in introducing the menu to us. We were underwhelmed and would not recommend it to others.
We can’t love this place more! Everything was perfect!
Very good Afghan food but service is too slow. It took 15 minutes to be seated despite a reservation and many empty tables. There was no one to meet guests at the door. Catching any of the waiters' attention is hit and miss. However the dinner was great.
Haven't been here in 15 years and it was just a good as I remember. The restaurant is very pretty and warm. Servers were very friendly. So many favorites. Don't miss the pumpkin appetizer and Aushak (Afgan ravioli).
My fiancé chose this restaurant for our date night. We arrived and were seated right away (we made a res)- the place was pleasantly full and staff friendly. The food came out quickly which usually makes me nervous but it was out of this world delicious. They can really do a lot with eggplant and spinach and vegetables. We had the pumpkin appetizer and the lamb entree& spinach stuffed eggplant entree and cardamom ice cream and tea for dessert. We didn’t feel rushed either even though our meals came out quickly. Can’t wait to go back!
Great richness and depth of flavors make The Helmand a dependable place to dine. Wine choices are reasonably priced and very enjoyable.
I love Helmand. Try the pumpkin appetizer!
Excellent food, good quantity, ideal for sharing dishes.
Consistently wonderful! I recommend to anyone looking for a delicious meal!
Husband and I used o go to their other restaurant many years ago and the food was always fabulous. This was our first time at thisHermand and the food is unbelievably good, the portions are huge. Fresh flowers on every table, super service, clean restaurant--the only problem was the the four women at the table next to us were very loud-but management moved us to another table!!! We will definitely go there at least once a month since we live about 7 miles away
Everything was amazing except service
Fantastic as always. Every time we leave the Helmand, we ask ourselves why we don't dine there more often. It offers an outstanding experience on all accounts -- service, ambiance, and of course the food. The pumpkin appetizer alone is worth the trip. We'll be back soon!
The pumpkin was delicious! The food was all excellent and there was lots of it!
Wonderful place, excellent food, perfect service. You can't go wrong with the Helmand.
Excellent food and service ! This place is always amazing
Great food! Great service! A real Baltimore gem!!!
Family get together. Food great. Waitress could’ve spent more time answering questions to newcomers.
It was wonderful to introduce the beloved Helmand to two close friends, who had not eaten there as of yet. Service was great and organic wine recommendation was perfect!
Everything was quite good. We had the pumpkin appetizer, mantwo, and aushak. For entrees, we had lamb specials. The glass of white Spanish cava was nice, much more food-friendly than most champagne.
Such a wonderful place! Definitely will come back to this place many more times. Our hostess (Alina or maybe Alinore) sorry if I messed your name up, you made it exceptionally pleasant dining experience!
One of my favorite restaurants in Baltimore! Fantastic food, wonderful service & cozy atmosphere.
The food was excellent as always. Service was a tad bit slow compared to previous visits but overall, it was great!
We always enjoy coming here. Great food and service.
Extremely reliable place--as good now as it was 20 years ago--and the prices seem hardly to have changed in that time.
We went to this place before a show at Center Stage and it was perfect. Very quick turn on the food which didn't compromise the quality of the food. Very tasty and memorable. This was our first foray into Afghan cuisine and after this experience, it won't be our last!
Five of us had dinner before theater; service was efficient, though we did have difficulty understanding our server, so the answers to our questions were not clear. That being said, the food was all delicious; we cleaned our plates. We all got vegetarian platters, two different offerings, and shared the excellent vanilla ice cream with dried fruit for dessert.
Food was excellent. Service was good however I mentioned it was a birthday on the phone and when I arrived and it was forgotten even though the waiter said sure not a problem. I also found it too loud in the main dining room. Once all the tables get full you cannot hear the other person across from you.
My cousin visiting from CA chose this restaurant after being given 6-8 restaurants to choose from. A few of us had been there and thought that it was a great choice. Some of us in the family are vegetarian and there are plenty of options for vegetarians, as well as meat eaters. Our 12 and 8 year olds enjoyed their meals as well, although they are move adventurous eaters that some kids who haven’t been exposed to anything but traditional American “kid food”. When we came in and found it cold sitting under the AC vent, they immediately turned off the AC. When my dad made a mistake in which meal he ordered and had wanted spinach. The waiter brought him a side of spinach “on him”. When I was indecisive about going for a dish, the waiter said that I could try it and send it back if I didn’t like it (I wouldn’t do that unless it was awful), but it was so generous of him to offer. The food was delicious! I don’t think anyone left much on their plates. We were happy for them that the tables filled up so much on a Sunday night, but the noise level never got very high. We were able to easily hear one another, as was my nearly 94 year old grandma with hearing loss! We will go back again and we will bring other visitors with us.
The food was AMAZING, I’ve had Afghan several times before and even the simple items (eg rice, bread) dishes were flavorful and made me sit up and notice. A little crowded (popular) the service was nice and friendly, though spotty, perhaps due to the crowd. Highly recommend for a great meal if you are new or familiar with Afghanistan cuisine. I had the Aushuk and Lawand Challow.
Everything was good except the entree. The lamb tenderloin was full of gristle and I had to spit out all four pieces. The Aushak was good, as was the naan. But after being customers for 20 years we will not be returning.
Still the best restaurant in Baltimore!
The Helmand is prefect at what it does. It would be nice to see something new on the menu. I am finding myself after several visits being bored by the selections.
