The Idle Rocks
Head Chef Guy Owen and his team have designed a menu around stories brought to fruition through carefully developed relationships with local suppliers, fishermen and farmers. It's a true celebration of Cornwall and offers an unforgettable culinary journey, with strong emphasis on seasonal flavours, keeping true to our sustainability ethos.
The Restaurant is open 7 days a week, with dining on the terrace when the sun shines. We offer a welcoming and lively atmosphere, with music playing, guests chattering, cocktails being created and a fantastic wine list to mull over and enjoy.
We truly love this place! From the minute you arrive you are made to feel special and valued as a guest. The food and service is outstanding. The views across the harbour and across Falmouth bay are breathtaking. The wine list is extensive with a good variety sourced locally. The cocktails are also fantastic. This is our favourite restaurant in Cornwall. Highly recommended.
The food was exquisite, the service outstanding and the setting unbeatable!
What a great New Years Eve lunch.
Loved it and will be returning.
We loved our evening here. Fabulous food and great service. Love the decor... very relaxed. Will be back.
We have been to Idle Rocks several times over the past 20 years or so and, although it has always provided an excellent dining experience, it is now quite outstanding. Well done to all staff.
The Idle Rocks is quite simply exceptional -,the staff are all amazing and the food just delicious
Loved it can't wait to return………………………………………………………...
Just a first class restaurant and first class food and service.
Idle Rocks always delivers quality food with excellent service. This visit was no exception and we will be back in the near future.
First visit to the Idle Rocks restaurant whilst on holiday in St Mawes. Food good, but rather pricey. Appreciated the Trevibban Mill sparkling wine. Atmosphere was somewhat lacking to start with, but we did dine early.
The location is very nice by the harbour side and the staff is pleasant and earnest. Unfortunately the service is frenetic and disorganized, with apparently no one in charge of the dining room. For example, our amuse-bouche arrived at the same time as our starters and even before water was poured. What should have been a quiet diner in an attractive restaurant with upscale aspirations turned out to be an uncomfortable evening out distracted by a staff rushing back and forth. Thank goodness we were not seated by the kitchen door! With the exception of the raw oysters, the food was undistinguished and way too salty. This may have reflected the fact that the chef was on holiday, but was unfortunate none the less. Hopefully leadership in the dining room and kitchen will improve in the future.
We love it here. Never disappoints with a great menu and a fantastic sommelier.
A special place in our world.
Fantastic food with a creative flair, for people who value well thought out dishes and flavour combinations who don’t mind paying for quality and enjoy an eating experience not just lunch or dinner.
Fantastic waterside location attentive service and lovely food with fresh seafood options
As good as ever, with charming staff and one of the best views in the country
Lovely evening - a special birthday made even more special. Michelin star food and exceptional service
Lovely food. Slightly inconsistent service - some amazing staff mixed amongst those who appeared to be going through the motions. Overall though really worth visiting and I admit I’m Benchmarking against london restaurants
Appalling service and the tiniest portions of food I’ve ever been served. We had to ask for more bread and still left hungry after two courses. Service was a shambles, everything that could have gone wrong did. Not what was expected for the price and it ruined a special occasion.
Excellent food deserving of a Michelin star. More trading of front of house staff would complete the experience. Front of house manager attentive and in the case! Tasting menu and wine pairing was up there with the best.....
We enjoyed the relaxed ambience of Idle Rocks. We had pre drinks on the terrace that provided lovely views to St Mawes and the distant coastline. The starter and main courses were flavoursome however they all needed to be served MUCH warmer. The Pork Belly with Black Garlic, Parsley and Anchovy starter is to be recommended as was the Moroccan lamb that came with an excellent side dish of vegetables, herbs and spices.
In addition to the food not being hot enough, the main course was served much TOO SOON after the starter courses. These two observations were reported and we trust were taken on board because they let down the chef / kitchen and an imaginative well executed menu.
The serving staff were attentive but one lacked some knowledge about each course; this was understandable because they were fairly new.
Overall enjoyable evening; so when we return at some point in the future we would like to award 5 stars across all aspects of the dining experience.
A lovely meal on a warm summers evening overlooking the St Mawes harbour. Service was excellent
Service, Food, Location - Just Perfect
This was our second visit to the idle rocks this time to celebrate our anniversary.the food was faultless and service exceptional, will be visiting again.
The service and food was fantastic,if you are in Cornwall this is a must!!
We found the service quite slow. I was disappointed with the smoked trout starter. It did not taste very good at all. The portions of food for the main dishes were very small with no vegetables included in the price. Nobody checked in with us throughout our meal. We thought if was overpriced for what we ate. Overall a disappointing experience.
What an excellent find. On arrival for our reservation, we decided to eat on the terrace as it was a sunny and warm evening. All the staff were very friendly and smartly dressed. The drinks list is extensive with enough to keep any non-alcoholic drinkers happy. The food was excellent. It was very well presented as well as tasting delicious. I would definitely eat here again.
Having held our daughters wedding reception, attended relatives anniversary parties and dined at the Idle Rocks previously it was my obvious venue for my husband's special birthday. The staff were extremly discreet regarding our daughter's gift of wine (letting us order then suprising us with the card and wine). The food was excellent as was the service. A most enjoyable evening - we will return again.
Excellent lunch overlooking the harbour. Attentive staff and a quality experience.
If we didn't live in Cornwall I could move in here . This is a location that anyone visiting should not miss . The hospitality of the Idle Rocks team is spot on and the food from a very talented chef is as good as anywhere in London that is rated . We have been here twice this year and will be back again.
Excellent atmosphere, casual and laid back. Or server was engaging and the food very good. The patio on the water had great views. The hotel is also very nice.
The food was amazing, the ambiance of the room was lovely , the little note left on the table wishing us a happy anniversary was so thoughtful, and the service was great. Many thanks.
We will be back !.
Up there with one of the best dining experiences I've had, if not the best. We were very fortunate with the weather, meaning it was glorious sunshine so we could sit outside and relax in the sun on the terrace, gazing at the stunning sea view. The staff were very knowledgeable about both the dishes and wine and couldn't do enough to make sure you had a top experience. Every plate (we went for the taster menu) was delicious, varied and beautifully presented. highly recommended. I'll be back.
Description of my crab starter was very misleading and the dish itself very frugal with not a lot of flavour
Again my brill main course did not have a lot of flavour all rather bland.
Certainly not worth the cost of the meal.
Probably one of the best locations in Cornwall
Lovely service and very tasty food, prices is very steep..
But looking forward to our next visit..
The total experience from the service to the food was outstanding. Myself and my partner both had the tasting menu and felt every course was put together perfectly. We are hoping to return for our next special occasion.
Booked this from home as we were travelling to stay at St Mawes and needed a nice meal after a long, long journey. We were absolutely blown away, the staff were exceptionally friendly and attentive and the food was simply amazing, every dish was a work of art. Fantastic restaurant.
We live on the continent where the myth is perpetuated that you cannot eat well in the British Isles. Well, a visit to The Idle Rocks should convince the most critical eaters and get them to enthusiastically report about the dining experience there. The chef knows what (s)he is doing. The food is cooked to perfection, presented very attractively and served professionally by friendly and motivated staff who manage to make you feel really welcome.
On top of that the location is stunning. The prices are not for the faint-hearted, but they represent the value of what you get for your money.
The Idle Rocks is a restaurant pearl tucked away in an unexpected corner. The star team provided us with an unforgettable experience for which we thank them very, very much.
Top level food and service in a contemporary yet very comfortable restaurant
For a special occasion this would be ideal particularly for people who love to know what's in a dish and all the ingredients etc. Lovely waterside location.
Lovely setting, fantastic greeting and pre dinner drink. Lovely food! Excellent service. A wonderful evening for our anniversary.
Had the set lunch menu. One of the nicest meals I’ve had - the flavours were amazing. Superb service and of course the view of St Mawes and the sea. Just a shame that we were the only couple in the restaurant! Definitely recommend it for a special occasion.
