Hands down best meal we’ve had in a long time. Mussels were delicious, food and drink also amazing.
My sister and I were celebrating her birthday and were looking forward to the Tasting Menu which we had previously. We were disappointed to learn that this was no longer a menu option but our server and the chef agreed to do a tasting menu just for us!!! It was amazing and we were so grateful!!!!
Fantastic atmosphere, great service and a robust menu. Highly recommend the seafood and finish off with vinegar pie. One of my favourites in St Johns. Book ahead!
We had a great time; so full of tasty raw tuna and ceviche scallops. A steak-frites with a sauce I wiped up every last drop with the generous fries. Salmon was cooked very well with a fresh sauce that made this dish lighter than other places, which was a delight. Vinegar pie was a neat treat: good work turning a modest meal from the 20s into something memorable. Service was friendly and efficient with a very knowledgeable service and precise support staff. Will recommend to all who ask for unique dining options in St. John’s.
This meal was one of the best we had in St. John’s. The ambiance, food, service - everything was amazing. And a great live band too!
The food was inventive and leveraged all of the great produce from the area. My pasta was perfectly al dente. The service was outstanding. Our waiter was extremely familiar with all ingredients that went into our meals. I will definitely go back next time I’m in town.
Ordered the beef tartare as an app to share. Quite disappointed at the quality of beef used for a raw dish. I’ve had this here before but seems they’ve changed the beef cut. Too bad. It shouldn’t be tough but rather tender and melt in your mouth. The mussels were very tasty. Frites were over cooked and unsalted. My husband enjoyed his meal of fish and chips. Seems the quality of food at The Merchant has dissipated recently which is unfortunate.
Great food! Great cocktails! The seafood was in season and really delicious.
One of my favorite locations, meal is always fantastic! The servers are always knowledgeable and pleasant.
The cod cakes were amazing. And the Dark Tickle cocktail was all too drinkable!
Best creme brûlée I’ve ever had! The cod dish was also amazing! Great service.
Excellent as usual!
Great atmosphere and food but he tables are a little close together so you don’t get the privacy you would like.
First class service and vino. Great food
loved our dinner. Our server Dylan was outstanding. Very knowledgable and personable. The food was outstanding. We had a vegan in our party and she loved the cauliflower steak.
Talented chefs producing finely executed meals. Great taste, wonderful presentation.
An enjoyable evening.
Jacob is an expert mixologist. The oysters were among the best we’ve ever had.
We've been to the Merchant many times and have always had a great time. Usually the service is exceptional and the food and wine worth the price. This time we were disappointed overall. We expected to have the Carte Blanche tasting menu but it seems they've done away with it which is a tragedy. The chef made an appearance and said he could "throw together a tasting menu if we wanted". Instead we were sold on the snow crab. It was underwhelming to say the least. There was just no way to recover after that. It seems as though Merchant and Raymond's have been abandoned by the two Jeramy's which is unfortunate since we will be seeking other restaurants to spend our money.
so we went there after an amazing meal at Raymonds. We are not disappointed. The atmosphere is more casual but the portions are big and the food is amazing! The sommelier helped us with great pairings for our duck and playful halibut -based jigs dinner! Our waitress was fun and helpful.
Amazing meal & extremely impressive service! Great spot for locals and visitors!
Service was fast. Food was outstanding. Can’t say anything else. Was a great evening out celebrating my kids graduating grade 2 and 4.
I feel the quality has gone down since we last ate there a year ago. The Caesar salad had too much dressing and we didn't care for the flavor. Fries are delicious. Many things had chili...
Disappointed from the time we arrived. I have been here a number of times with no issues. You only remember your last experience.
Taking a friend who’s leaving town out for a farewell dinner.
From Maria , who made the reservation , through the raw bar experience with the chefs and servers, it was an excellent evening
We waited for over thirty minutes to get our table (reserved for months). Then we waited two hours for our main course. Very disappointed overall. We have been there in the past and our experience was much better. Not sure we will be back.
This was my first time to the restaurant, I went there with my sister for an early birthday brunch, we had reviewed the menu and had our choices made before we went. My sister ordered the fishcakes of which there were none left, I ordered the quiche, there was none left so we had to rethink our order. we both ordered Chicken and waffles , I assumed the chicken would be white meat, I guess I should have asked because we weren't told anything by our server, it was like pulling teeth. It was a thigh with skin still on (I hate skin), the batter was overcooked, dry and hard, the waffle was also bland and dry, there was no sauce (I guess I should have asked for that too) the server offered no help or information on what was available and since it was our first time, we had no idea what to ask for. It did not come with hashbrowns so we had to order those extra, they were so burnt and hard you couldn't even eat them with a fork, the few we did manage to eat we picked up with our fingers. The egg on top of the chicken was under cooked, the white of the egg was still all jelly (not sure if this is the way it is supposed to be but it looked horrible). Also the bill was totaled wrong. We tried not to ruin our special lunch by complaining so we said "live and learn" and we just won't go back. "Not my cup of tea."
We made a reservation earlier in the week for a table of 4 for brunch. When we arrived for our reservation, we were instead given not a table but corner seats at the oyster bar, which was vacant since it was brunch. I told the hostess that we had a reservation for a table, but she informed me that this was the seats that were assigned to us and could not be changed. Patrons walking-in and sitting at the bar with no reservations appeared to have a better atmosphere than we did with a reservation.
A few other bad notes: I was only served the coffee I ordered upon arrival after I received my meal – I had to remind the waitress that I never received it (she didn't check up on our table from the moment we ordered to when our food arrived, so this was the first opportunity I had to notify her). Same thing with my tea biscuit, I only got it after my meal, after I reminded the waitress that it never arrived.
Having been a regular customer at this establishment since its opening, and this experience left a really sour taste in my mouth. I was sincerely disappointed with the service I received. To the best of my knowledge,I was never notified during booking, by email, or by phone, that the table that I was going to be assigned was not a table at all, but what were (in my opinion) the worst seats in the house during the brunch service.
I'd highly recommend anybody considering booking a reservation to call the establishment to inquire about the table they will actually be assigned.
The food was very disappointing. A seafood soup that had no flavour and was so hot and overcooked the fish had dissolved. This was followed by two pasta dishes which again lacked flavour. Three of our dishes were barely touched yet the waiter did not ask if there was a problem. The service was equally poor, very offhand. At the end of the meal I said to the waiter we were disappointed with the food and he just shrugged. The people around us ate hamburger and chips which says it all. This place is relying on noise and a trendy look to get it through. It is really a bar not a restaurant serving quality food.
Menu is nicely varied and freshened up frequently. Food is great and the overall experience of dining there is very enjoyable.
Excellent lunch as always - Caesar salad and seafood soup both menu staples that never fail to disappoint.
Staff dinner. Not told there was a time limit on the table. Spent $600 only to be asked if we would be done soon as there was another party waiting for our table by hostess. When we refused a drunk woman who was waiting for our table was told by the hostess that it was our table she was waiting for and she accosted us. My staff were horrified. This was embarrassing and spoiled what would otherwise have been a lovely evening and experience.
Went for our anniversary brunch. Food was delicious but the tables are a little to close to others....felt like we were sat at the table with them
Service was great..food was mediocre. We were disappointed.
Fabulous service, attractive venue, comfortable seating. I had my 5 month old daughter with me and she got a bit fussy when the food came out. The server offered to put my plate under the heating lamp until I was ready. I have never had that offered to me before and it was greatly appreciated (though not expected). Would highly recommend this restaurant.
Disappointed with no menu additions for Mother's Day weekend brunch. No dessert specials either. Lack of seafood options extremely disappointing. Food was poorly seasoned and bland. Service was terrible - had to ask hostess to get server for coffee refills. $110 for 2 adults and 2 children with no alcohol or dessert. Atmosphere felt tense and unwelcoming. This was our monthly family brunch restaurant, but we will be looking somewhere new next month.
Food was great. Server was very attentive. I usually go for an evening meal but this time we went there for brunch and it is much quieter that in the evening. We enjoyed it greatly. The only issue I would have is the noice when dining in the evening. The food is most always great. Service is good as well.
We had made the reservation over a week in advance through Open Table. When we got there we were disappointed to be escorted to sit at the raw bar when we expected to have a table for 2. When we explained this to the host (and that nowhere online were we given the option to choose the raw bar vs regular seating), he was kind enough to reorganize seating to provide us with a table for 2. The meal was fantastic, the server attentive without being intrusive and the prices were very reasonable given the quality of the dining experience. We'll be back!
I had been here before and had an amazing experience. This time the food was just ok and had very few seafood options.... actually only 1. They said it was because nothing local was available but other restaurants seemed to find local options. They have a fish in their logo!! The bar tender was great as were the drinks but once we transferred to our table the disappointment began. Our waitress was so curt with little or personality.... to the point of being rude. We were all so turned off by her attitude and the limited seafood that after our appetizers we ejected to leave. My two companions were very disappointed as I had trumpeted this place for a couple days. If the waitress had been warmer or even civil we might have stayed and had something else .... the food did look good.
