The main dishes are always top quality with an ever changing menu, but I have to say that the halibut this time was the best ever. The attention to detail from a clearly motivated and professional staff is consistently exceptional.

Service was slow in an almost empty restaurant. Sone if the food was cold when it arrived. I’ve been to this place on numerous occasions and it’s very inconsistent in service and the quality of the food. I had a gift card my reason for returning.

Just a thought but a little bread with the meal would be welcome.

I’m never disappointed! We have brought our kids several times and they are treated like regular guests. I love the food is dumbed down for children.

Good food and beer choices - steak was a little chewy but chicken was juicy. Great atmosphere and service!

It was our annual Christmas Girls get-together. We wanted to come earlier, but we could only get a reservation for 1:30. We were told the kitchen closed in 15 minutes, so we placed our order as soon as we got there. Parking was a huge issue- many loops around the streets of downtown to get a space to park. The menu was short, but there was selection. The dessert menu had 3 items- pie, milkshake and Madelines. Neither of the menus that are on the website was what we ordered from.

It wasn't as cozy as it was the last time we were there. Next year, we will most likely go somewhere else.

Excellently prepared appetizers and mains. The servers and kitchen staff were quick to accommodate my friend's allergies, which we both really appreciated!

I went here with a date during the holidays, and we both ordered pasta: the linguini and rigatoni. Both were great, and the chef also sent out additional sea food that would compliment the meal. The service was wonderful, prompt, and our server was friendly and approachable. My only qualm with the experience was our table, which was in the middle of the floor, and as a result, people were rushing by on both sides of the table. However, our server was mindful of this and apologized for our location.

Fantastic staff and fantastic food - I will come here again, and hope to try their brunch menu as well!

We got to the table and ordered our drinks and sat and chatted. The waiter gave us a long time before coming over to tell us that 4/7 of the brunch items were not available. After placing our order we waited nearly an hour to get our food. Our waiter did not come by to check on us or let us know when we could expect our food. Luckily different waiters came by and refiled our coffee. Finally our food arrived and the waiter just dropped it off, didn't ask us if we needed anything even though we wanted ketchup for our hash browns. Overall, the very limited menu was disappointing but I understand it happens, but with poor service it really was a bad experience.

We enjoyed a wonderful familybrunch to celebrate the upcoming holidays. Everyone walked away completely satisfied with their meal. The icing on the cake was how accommodating, kind and generous our server (and other staff) were to our little girl who is only 2 1/2 and to us as parents.

Only issue we had was that there was no dessert menu. Which allowed us to leave the restaurant and spend the money elsewhere.

I love this restaurant. Food and service are fantastic. Though, I can't recall seeing attractive vegan or vegetarian food on the menu. I didn't like the area we sat down this time-like a “side room”. It felt sort of isolated.

We asked for a quieter out of the way table...there was a sit down table area that seemed to be more subtle. Rather than the closer together bar height tables. Having a date night and chat seemed too open.

Merchant Tavern very nice atmosphere. Tables are small and close together. Not very professional in my opinion!!
Service was great!
Food selection was average but the prices are very high for what you are getting. 22 to 34 $$ for a hamburger 🍔 that comes with enough fries for four people!! No one can eat that many fries 🍟 so it’s very poor value for the $$
Would not recommend it as things are there now!!

Went there recently for dinner with a few girl friends. The food was fine, menu is small which is kinda nice. Service lacked though. We had to constantly flag our server for drinks, bills, etc. One friend ordered 3 oysters and he gave her 6 (which she paid for), and he kept telling us it would be a second for food but 10 mins later still nothing. Overall maybe not the experience I expected.

Food was great but when we got there (on time for the reservation) had to wait almost 25 to be seated as our table wasn’t ready! Then took forever for our order to be taken. From there on it was great.

Our third visit to Merchant and food has yet to disappoint.

Pasta & ceasar salad appetizers followed by melt in your mouth striploin, compound herb butter served with the best frites (fries) on the planet. Superb chocolate Brownie & Madelaines for dessert.

Please update online menu as changes occur due to availability of seasonal ingredients. Significantly different & smaller menu available on arrival with several personal favorites not available. Mussels on current also were not available.

See you again soon!

The experience at merchants was fantastic, we took advantage of the online reservation and had 0 wait when we arrived. The salmon and cod were very fresh and the "wise jack" was unreal! I have been to Merchants on several occasions and will continue to support his fine establishment.

Food quality seems to be slowing slipping. Had fish cakes for brunch not as good as the last time. Smaller , less flavour and not as visually appealing. Very limited menu.

Ate at Merchant twice in the past week, once for business, once for pleasure. Service was great both times, with knowledgeable and suitably attentive staff.

I was ever so slightly disappointed in the quality however. For example both seafood (tuna) and beef entrées were not prepared as requested (medium served when medium rare requested). The beef could have been interpreted as medium-well.

I have eaten there in the past with much more impressive results. Hopefully these were anomalies, and not a trend.

Mind you I do still highly recommend it, and I will be coming back!

Cheers.

Enjoyed the food so much our first night in St. John's, we decided to return. It was very busy, so service was a bit on the slow side. It was worth the wait however. Everything was delicious--tomato salad, green curry mussels, smoked chicken cavatelli and yellowfin tuna were all perfectly prepared and flavourful.
