The Merchant Tavern Ratings and Reviews
We were there for Sunday brunch. It was great. We’ll definitely be back.
Had a wonderful meal in a very nice ambience. Service was wonderful and food was great. Would recommend for occasions or just regular dining.
We asked for a quieter out of the way table...there was a sit down table area that seemed to be more subtle. Rather than the closer together bar height tables. Having a date night and chat seemed too open.
Merchant Tavern very nice atmosphere. Tables are small and close together. Not very professional in my opinion!!
Service was great!
Food selection was average but the prices are very high for what you are getting. 22 to 34 $$ for a hamburger 🍔 that comes with enough fries for four people!! No one can eat that many fries 🍟 so it’s very poor value for the $$
Would not recommend it as things are there now!!
Went there recently for dinner with a few girl friends. The food was fine, menu is small which is kinda nice. Service lacked though. We had to constantly flag our server for drinks, bills, etc. One friend ordered 3 oysters and he gave her 6 (which she paid for), and he kept telling us it would be a second for food but 10 mins later still nothing. Overall maybe not the experience I expected.
Excellent food paired with fantastic friendly service - a must try while in St. John's
Food was great but when we got there (on time for the reservation) had to wait almost 25 to be seated as our table wasn’t ready! Then took forever for our order to be taken. From there on it was great.
Our third visit to Merchant and food has yet to disappoint.
Pasta & ceasar salad appetizers followed by melt in your mouth striploin, compound herb butter served with the best frites (fries) on the planet. Superb chocolate Brownie & Madelaines for dessert.
Please update online menu as changes occur due to availability of seasonal ingredients. Significantly different & smaller menu available on arrival with several personal favorites not available. Mussels on current also were not available.
See you again soon!
The experience at merchants was fantastic, we took advantage of the online reservation and had 0 wait when we arrived. The salmon and cod were very fresh and the "wise jack" was unreal! I have been to Merchants on several occasions and will continue to support his fine establishment.
Attentive and knowledgeable service. Linear menu with just enough choice and variety. Delicious mains with some authentic flavours and the desserts are memorable!
Any amateur foodie/enthusiast will love Merchant tavern. You get immersed in entire prep, cooking experience. I enjoy watching the kitchen, plating, all the tools and food. The service is always great and the food is super tasty.
Food quality seems to be slowing slipping. Had fish cakes for brunch not as good as the last time. Smaller , less flavour and not as visually appealing. Very limited menu.
Ate at Merchant twice in the past week, once for business, once for pleasure. Service was great both times, with knowledgeable and suitably attentive staff.
I was ever so slightly disappointed in the quality however. For example both seafood (tuna) and beef entrées were not prepared as requested (medium served when medium rare requested). The beef could have been interpreted as medium-well.
I have eaten there in the past with much more impressive results. Hopefully these were anomalies, and not a trend.
Mind you I do still highly recommend it, and I will be coming back!
Awesome! Great atmosphere
Our food was very underwhelming, especially for the price we paid. It was basically overpriced pub grub. Very bland.
Fabulous brunch. Staff are great. Will go back anytime. Tks!!
Great experience with spectacular service. We were sat at the raw bar. Staff were great and throughout the meal we have some small chat with the prep team which was nice. We had the chefs choice and the variety was nice.
Excellent as per usual... that's why we go about once a week!
Enjoyed the food so much our first night in St. John's, we decided to return. It was very busy, so service was a bit on the slow side. It was worth the wait however. Everything was delicious--tomato salad, green curry mussels, smoked chicken cavatelli and yellowfin tuna were all perfectly prepared and flavourful.
Best steaks! Loved my cocktail and Port Rexton beer.
My wife and I ate at the Merchant Tavern for supper and were delights with our meal and service. It is a vibrant and relaxed atmosphere. Our service was fantastic. We had halibut done perfectly. The food is fresh, tasty and amble. I cannot wait to go again!!
Friendly service and great food. A good first night in St. John's.
My girlfriend and I did the tasting menu and were blown away with not just the taste and presentation but the creativity of the dishes. Each dish was delicious and while we were both stuffed still managed to eat it all. Our server was super friendly and knowledgeable about each course. Highly recommend this restaurant and go the tasting menu route, you will not be disappointed!!!!
The menu is extensive offering creative presentation of great food. The food was delicious and presented with flair. The servers are fantastic, knowledgable, friendly, courteous and fast. Even the wine server knew all about the wines. We loved the noise and bussel and will certainly be there every time we are in town.
The food was amazing! The only downside was that it felt like they were trying to rush us out a bit.
A highly recommended restaurant on our first visit to St. John's - the food was good but the overall experience was impacted by less than optimal customer service. 1. Our reservation was made at least a month ago and we were provided a table with a view of the wall and we weren't able to move even though it was still relatively early and the restaurant wasn't busy. 2. All pastas are offered as full or smaller portions - except the special of the day which was absolutely only available as a full portion. 3. There was a food allergy restriction and I couldn't eat the potatoes and vegetables that came with the steak - and the only possible substitute was French fries - not quite the dining experience expected and a rather expensive disappointment.
Was not impressed with the nuggets and fries I had as it seemed like regular pub food! I would choose something different next time! Dessert, which was vinegar pie, was delicious!!
Had the five-course tasting menu,
The Merchant was rated very well and so I expected good things. Our server was highly attentive and endured that we felt looked after when our food took longer than anticipated. Still, after having been to some rural restaurants in Newfoundland, I was beginning to expect slow food and wasn't too bothered by the time for the food.
The bread was tasty, as were our mussels, but the main left something to be desired. I ordered the ribeye and was very disappointed with the quality of the steak, plating and the accompaniments. The steak was seasoned with a wild leek salsa Verde, which was primarily chopped parsley and put me off. My first bite of steak was met with a bit of bone and the fat was still fatty and not rendered well. The steak was to be accompanied by mushrooms, fingerling potatoes, new onions and peas. I ended up with chunks of boiled potatoes, mushy peas that tasted like they were frozen and overboiled and boiled mushrooms. It was very disappointing, aside from the just that was on the plate. It was not what I was expecting from a restaurant with its reputation.
The cocktails and dessert were tasty, with a fantastic buttermilk strawberry ice cream.
Fanatic meal as always ! Can always expect the freshest local ingredients!
Merchant Tavern is an upscale spot that provides everything you want of any great restaurant: delicious, locally inspired dishes, wonderfully attentive service, and a fabulously unique aesthetic that blends mid-century modern with Newfoundland roots.
Food was delicious!
Our waiter wasn't the friendliest. Seemed to spend her entire time with the couple next to us. So much so that other servers were coming to us and trying to take care of us.
She wasn't friendly of accommodating at all.
Everyone else was super friendly and great !! We love the merchant tavern and have been there a few times now.
We will be back for our reservation on the 9th with my parents ! Their first time here to NL! Looking forward to it :)
The food is always inovative and excellent. Staff are great. I found the pace of service a bit rushed. It is a very loud room, some sound obsorbing measures would improve the ambience.
Great service and ambiance. I'd go again.
This is my favourite restaurant in St. John's. Unpretentious, flavourful, unique...I can't say enough good things about this place. The best cup of coffee I've ever had!
Excellent!! Great service, food and atmosphere. Delicious!!
Excellent food with interesting and innovative mains. The noise level was fairly high but reflected the energy of the youngish business crowd in the room.
You could tell a lot of planning went into the design and development of this restaurant. Beautiful open space with low noise level, nicely decorated and pleasant service. And best of all, the food was done just right. Great value - recommended.
The high tables where we were seated were very close together, which meant our elbows were constantly being bumped by waiters, and we felt uncomfortably close to other diners-- I didn't feel like the ambiance for that reason, although the restaurant interior is very nice. Service felt a bit rushed in the beginning, and then lagged when we were trying to pay our bill.
Was really looking forward to celebrating our Anniversay here but was really disappointed with the restaurant overall. The tables were so close together that it felt like you were sitting with strangers. My husband ordered a seafood soup as an appetizer and it came out with a long hair over the top of it- a very unappetizing way to start a meal. Server was not very apologetic. For the main I ordered the chicken and it was very dry. The sides consisted of a grilled lettuce which took up most of the plate and 4 tiny slices of a fingerling potato/ onion that was under cooked and not very filling at all. Left very disappointed and hungry and had to visit another restaurant to get a dessert to help fill us up. Thankfully we got much better service/ food there.
