Stunning beautiful building and a wonderful meal with dessert that are a work of art,
Will definitely return and we’ll recommend this restaurant
Our waitress was more than accommodating and patient with our requests. We were there for over 2 hours and did not feel rushed at all. It was an anniversary dinner plus a birthday celebration & we had the best seat in the house!
Kudos to Lindsey.
This was our do-over Valentines dinner and our first time and the Pressgang. There was a jazz duet playing by our table, they were great, just the right volume so we could talk and enjoy the music. The staff are friendly and attentive without being overbearing. The pace of the flooding coming out was perfect so we didn’t feel rushed. Both the appetizers and mains were perfect, I had the prime rib medium rare (cooked to perfection) and my wife had the duck, she loved it. I even had some of my potatoes, which I never eat, I just couldn’t resist. While the food is a little more expensive it’s well worth it. We will be back again and again.
Was absolutely the best meal I have ever had. My Fiancee and I went together and ordered The Drill. It was an elegant mastery of haute cuisine. Foie Gras, Scallops, Filet Mignon, Swordfish, and Ribeye all made an appearance in this one meal. It was not cheap ~$300 including a bottle of wine and tip, but well worth it for the quality. We will be going again next year for sure!
Went for our anniversary, we had never been here before. Food was delicious, service was fantastic. Husband ordered the rib eye and it was coated in bbq sauce. For such a great cut of meat bbq sauce not needed. We will definitely be back
Food was delicious and the service was exceptional!
Lovely, historic interior, and even more lovely staff. Had the most wonderful first experience here and it will not be my last. Thank you, Press Gang!
Went for Valentine’s Day, our table was in the middle of a major pathway from other areas of the restaurant. Service was as to be expected at a high quality, well established restaurant.
Food was outstanding but the dining location, noise level and hustle and bustle around us detracted from the experience.
I thoroughly enjoyed my oysters however my main course was extremely bland in flavou. I was unimpressed with the dish and felt it fell far from expectations. The good news is that my dinner partner was very pleased with her meal from start to finish.
Wonderful dining event for us . Staff were welcoming, paid just the right attention . Lovely quiet atmosphere.
Best whiskey selection EVER!
Great meal, very flavourful, only complaint is the beef was over cooked.
Great attentive staff, lovely atmosphere.
We had The Drill and were thoroughly impressed with each course. Was super impressed that we had a chance to meet the chef at the end of the meal when he came to each table to introduce himself. Can't wait to go back and see what the chef has in store for the next Drill.
Service great. The Robbie Burns dinner with scotch pairing was nice. Appreciate the chef coming over to speak with us
We dined there Saturday evening and we had the most delicious dishes. Our server, Sondra, was exceptional. Thanks for the great dining experience. Sondra also got us seats at the bar so we could enjoy the jazz music. Really lively and fun. We'll come again for sure.
Again another evening at The Press Gang. This time a food tribute to Robbie Burns. Great to try something new. However, far, far too much food per course. As good as it was I could not finish any of the courses. Scotch was very good and nice change from our usual wine with dinner. Thanks to the chef for another great experience while in Halifax.
We were a party of 7 people. I write this review for 3 of those. I did not contact the other 4. The escargot was mediocre. The green onion flavour and the sheep cheese were overpowering. The one order of lamb shank was thought to be fine with the veggies very firm, as was liked. The order of calamari was adequate but with very little sauce on the bottom of the plate. The crabcake had far too much potato relative to the crab. The sea food riscitto was tasty. The nonflour chocolate cake and the bread pudding were grossly over sweet. The bread pudding wasn't eaten bec ause of its sweetness.
We had Henry’s Feast and it was delicious. Service was excellent from all employees. The only suggestion is to not serve everything on one large platter instead bring the food out by item so that food is served at optimal temperature for eating.
Amazing service, amazing food
Totally enjoyed our meal at The Press Gang. The ambiance was very cozy and antique. The service excellent and the food delicious.
Disappointed in this Halifax gem. Menu items were a throw back to the 90s, bbq sauce on the steak was too heavy and smothered the flavour of the meat. The sweetened butter was just....weird.
My manhattan and oysters at the beginning of the meal were a highlight. They still do amazing oysters.
Called yesterday wanting to describe my experience to them before posting here. No call back.
Food was not good at all
Service was great, very friendly and attentive
Wonderful meal, wonderful staff, fabulous atmosphere. Wish I had visited sooner. Definitely going back.
Terrific atmosphere in an historic space with candlelit stone and beams. Food is first rate accompanied by a very good wine list. The live music creates a vibrant but not overpowering dynamic and the service is attentive.
Excellent dinner and service, great amount of food
An awesome New Year's Eve menu. Food was delicious, service was excellent. Great ambiance, quiet intimate table location - what more could you ask for. Happy New Year 2019;-)
Everything was great. I found the chef yelling out to the servers a bit distracting. This would be my only negative complaint. We enjoyed the meal except for one of the deserts.
The space is historic and has a lot of character. The service was great and our appetizers were fine, but the main courses were very disappointing. The Lobster Gnocchi was over sauced, over seasoned and resembled a bowl of soup more than a plate of pasta, also the lobster was chewy and tough. The Wild Board Chop was overcooked and dry but was accompanied by a delicious barley risotto (the star of the meal!) Overall we felt the quality of the food did not nearly match the price. You are paying for a unique ambiance, but I wouldn't recommend or return to this restaurant myself.
Had an awesome time with family, great food/wine, good service, wonderful place. Will definitely return.
Our 3rd time and the food was Great yet again. The Drill did not disappoint.
Salad lacked dressing. The Risotto was gummy, not creamy. Fish overcooked.
Oysters are excellent. Boar chops were very good.
One thing that is consistent is the excellent level of service and restaurant cleanliness. We have never had poor service at the Press Gang.
The ambience here is so charming it's hard to bash it. Easily one of my favorite spots to kick back. That being said, two out of three of us at the table were very disappointed in their food choices. At this price point, everything should be phenomenal or at least meet expectations and it missed the mark by a lot; especially the lobster gnocchi. Still, a great vibe and a halifax staple if you order the right things. My oysters were excellent.
Went for a staff Christmas party. Overall a good experience with exceptional food. Service was attentive though somewhat absent, especially given the number of other patrons in the restaurant. There was also some room for improvement when it comes to suggestions for paired wines, oyster preferences, and other complementary dishes—this knowledge was lacking during our visit. In addition, while the food was delicious and cooked very well, portion sizes were underwhelming for the price of the dishes. Would recommend, overall, and would visit again.
It was a great meal with great service , although a little expensive for some tastes !
Fantastic restaurant! Excellent food that was perfectly prepared and prompt friendly service. Loved the atmosphere. An amazing dining experience overall and would highly recommend this restaurant.
The food was really good. I had Lamb Shanks, and Pumpkin Spice Creme Brule for dessert was excellent. Service was efficient, and servers were friendly and helpful. This is my 4th time dining here, and it never fails me each time. My work colleagues enjoyed their meal and had a great time.
The oysters were fantastic. The cocktails as well. The mains tasted like they were boiled and then microwaved. Bland. Almost inedible.
I was persuaded (read fooled) by all of the positive reviews. I would not recommend this restaurant at all. At all.
On top of it all, it was expensive. I'd like a refund.
Poor choices of wine by the glass
Steak was dry
I take the time to write this review, for your benefit not mine, and it gives me a message that it has to be 50 characters. I will add this to my list of complaints about my experience
The swordfish in the menu was delicious. The torch oyster was amazing .
Best Oyster and Scotch selection in Halifax. Excellent service and cozy atmosphere. Stay classy Press Gang.
We had an amazing dinner here during our weekend in Halifax! The ambiance was great, the live jazz was sensational and the food was fantastic! We can’t wait to come back here the next time we are in town
