The Velvet Glove - The Fairmont Winnipeg
Chef Daniel Davyduke has created menus that you will remember for a life time, with locally sourced ingredients, seasonally inspired dishes, and a passion that can't be beat. The Velvet Glove also features one of Winnipeg's most sexy wine lists, with wines that you will not see in just any restaurant!
We ate here for our 5 year anniversary and we had a great experience. we really appreciate the little touch of rose petals on our table. the staffs were very friendly and very attentive to our needs. when the server noticed that my fiance didn’t like the drink that he ordered, she gave us a drink on the house even when we insisted that we were okay with the drink. the food was very delicious. the dessert was really good too and we got it for free as well. Will definitely come back here again and recommend to other friends.
Wonderful place for our valentines breakfast ❤️
The hostess returned and sat us at a lovely table, by the fireplace, and the first thing my husband said was, we haven't been here for a while I really like the ambiance in this room.
While sitting and wondering is any one was going to come to the table, a waiter passed and apologized and said he would be right with us. It was 15 min at least, and then we ordered a bottle of wine as we had our cocktail in the lounge. WE asked is the cauliflower on the menu was the same as the one in the lounge and were told yes, he thought so....please note the dinning room is empty except for a table of
5 and 2 its not BUSY.... OUR WAITER went by us numerous times apologizing
and finally I asked if we could at least have our wine while we wait, he brought it right away, then he camr back to clarify our order....WE ordered 1 rib eye to share and an order of cauliflower. Not hard to remember, compared to 5 different orders at one table ....I thought it strange so obviously our order was delayed while he ran back and forth with the table for 5.
I asked for ice water, got water tap warm, and bowl full of soggy black coloured cauliflower
we didn't eat, no salt and pepper, no rolls. offered had to ask a different waiter that passed our table.
When I mentioned the cauliflower he just replied oh that's how the chef makes it, I said they don't look very appetizing and are mushy as in overcooked.
No apologies just the bill ....I don't know what was going on in the kitchen but it was poor service, in the dinning room, I would have hated to be there at a busy time.
The waiter, needs to be versed in all aspects of your dinning menu, he only has to study VG only
and provide the correct information.
We were very disappointed, this was a special night at MTC and overnight at the Fairmont.
We feel the management needs to know this, in order to rectify.
Another issue needs to be mentioned but not enough space here.
Excellent service and delicious food. Happy to recommend to other diners.
Outstanding as always! I love the seasonal changes on the menue!
Fabulous experience - from valet parking to a wonderful birthday dessert prepared as a surprise ! Beautifully decorated for Christmas !
Service was incredible. Food was good.
My Daughter and I both ordered the Thanksgiving Day special and instead of a real turkey we got a Butterball rolled turkey and the mashed potatoes were like water.
The people next to us complained about the same thing and may have been compensated.
For $176.00 for 2 people this was a rip off and when I got back to the office on Tuesday I was embarrassed to tell fellow staff members what I thought.
My Daughter is in Marketing and liver in Vancouver and came to visit and couldn't believe what we were served.
I frequent restaurants in the city every day at work and we probable could of got a better meal at a greasy spoon restaurant.
Yes I was shocked that it had a 5 star on the internet.
We have pictures of the meal and am wonder in if anyone from the Fairmount was going to contact me.
My wife, my sister and I brought my parents to VG for their 50th Anniversary dinner (we had previously taken a Caribbean cruise to celebrate, but on the official day of their anniversary I wanted to treat them to dinner). I made a note on my OpenTable reservation that thre dinner was for a 50th celebration. Upon our arrival we were seated at a round table (perfect for 5 people) decorated with scattered yellow rose petals - a very nice touch. We were then served a complimentary flute of champagne - absolutely lovely. After a delicious milk bun appetizer, followed by an incredible meal with THE BEST rib-eye steak I have ever eaten, we were then offered a complimentary dessert to share, a fantastic cake loaf. It's these touches that made an anniversary dinner extra special, and it's for this reason we will definitely be back and have already recommended VG to friends and family. It couldn't have been a better decision to choose this restaurant to celebrate a special night with my family.
I was very dissappointed in our dining experience. We ordered 3 appetizers, 4 mains and a vegetable. Every dish seemed under seasoned and flat. It did not taste bad but it by no means impressed. The appetizer portions are extremely small, however the main dishes were a great size. Our server was very good but the food coming out from the kitchen was extremely slow and in fact the vegetable we ordered came when everyone was already done or 3/4 through their meal. I really wanted to love it but I wouldn't go back.
It was a lovely evening! Wonderful food and excellent service. Highly recommend the Velvet Glove!
The Milk Buns melt in your mouth!
Great food and atmosphere. Serving staff was friendly. One of the nicer upscale restaurants in the city.
We celebrated our anniversary at the Velvet Glove and everything was fantastic! The food was delicious and beautifully plated (highly recommend the pork belly) and the servings were very generous. Our waiter, Cam, was absolutely fantastic, and found the answer to any question we asked him. To top off the wonderful experience, we were given complimentary bubbly and dessert in honour of our anniversary! My husband and I had an amazing night out away from the kids, and we can’t wait to go back!
We loved it. We were celebrating a special occasion and the staff made us feel so special. Had the salmon and the ribeye, both were exceptional. Such a great evening.
It was my daughter’s 26th Bday lunch....and we had always heard that the burgers were great at Velvet Glove...but they actually were outstanding!! Our server was fabulous, friendly & attentive...we sampled a few other items besides the very tasty Bothwell Truffle cheese burger....we had the cauliflower fritters, buttermilk chicken...and creme brûlée of course for the bday dessert....everything was fabulous! 🎉👏🏻
Thank you to everyone there for making our experience so memorable 🙏🏻👏🏻
I have been to the restaurant several times in the last few months and each time I have been very impressed with both the food and the service. I have tried several items from the breakfast and also the new brunch menu. The dishes are inventive, tasty and I appreciate that the chef is using local ingredients. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a great dining experience!
I also recently came for a dinner meal to celebrate my wedding anniversary and both my husband and myself cannot say enough about the evening. The staff made sure to seat us in a great location and went above and beyond to make sure we had a special night. The food was amazing and we enjoyed each and every dish that we ate.
Food and service were excellent.
It seems they have new chairs since I last visited. I found them less than comfortable unfortunately. . . Stylish though.
The chairs aside I very much enjoyed my breakfast 🙂
We arrived at 7:15 pm to a virtually empty restaurant. It remained that way until we left a 10:30 pm. In spit of the lack of customers, we found that it took an interminable amount of time to receive each portion of our meal. I understand leisurely dining, but three and a half hours is ridiculous. In addition, I had prearranged with the hotel to have the chef present a special 50th anniversary gift to my wife under a sterling silver server as if it were her dessert. Likely due to the fact that the meal had taken so long, the gift was presented by our waitress with the dessert, under a shabby kitchen warming cover. The chef probably had gone home. It really spoiled the effect that I had worked hard to set up. The food was good, but not up to the standard I have come to expect from the Velvet Glove.
Sunday brunch is not to be missed! The prices are totally affordable, there's something for everyone on the menu and the Caesar Cart is such a fun treat. I can't say enough good things about it.
I had communicated with Daniel a couple weeks before our arrival regarding dietary restrictions and found him to me most accommodating. I looked forward to thanking him personally but he was not on shift that night. There will be more opportunities. Our celebratory dinner was fantastic! After being seated, our server, Joanna, gave me a couple options and I chose the lamb Sirloin with capers and roasted tomatoes, which Gee in the kitchen cooked to perfection and I thoroughly enjoyed! My husband said his salmon on creamed spinach was also delicious and cooked to his liking. Dessert, complimentary for the occasion, was shared Crème brûlée and finished the meal off nicely. Our package included breakfast the next morning and our server - Rob or Roy (sorry can’t recall), said we could have anything from the menu, including orange juice and coffee. The Healthy Start (poached eggs on avocado naan bread with roasted tomato and basil salad) was my choice. The bowl it was served in was a bit awkward to eat out of but that didn’t stop me from enjoying every last bite. My husband’s choice was the the Side by Each, which he said also hit the spot.
My wife and my first time to the restaurant. I always wanted to try it because we heard it had a great history for interesting food. We tried the salmon tartar for an appetizer and we both thought is was a bit bland and skimpy. Interesting wafer at the bottom that overpowered the salmon and felt it was not worth the $17.
My wife had the Salmon and thought it was just OK . Not offensive but not Wow. I had the Bouillabaisse(my first time, I like to try new things). Tasted like three pieces of fish with small potatoes in salty water. It didn't look particularly tough to prepare but who knows. Personally, I would take it off the menu and replace with a vegan or vegetarian dish as my wife would likely have chosed that instead.
Bread was super good and so was the hummus that came with it.
Service was great. I gave a 20% tip that I hope mostly went to the server, she was very nice.
Would like to come back because your space is great and close to the theatres, but not with the menu you have.
Took my boyfriend here for his birthday and we had a table in a private area. It was very romantic. Our server was great, food was amazing, and the place is beautiful! Would definitely recommend!
Great as always!
I would highly recommend The Velvet Glove restaurant for your next discreet, quiet, comfortable, fine dining experience. We asked for a quiet area for 6 and they were able to accommodate us, no problem.
It will continue to be our 'go to' place for power breakfasts. Give it a try, you will be happy you did.
We had brunch at the velvet glove. The food was excellent. Each brunch dish was well presented and tasted excellent. The Caesar brunch cart is an added benefit! Our waiter was friendly, but he had too many tables to oversee and thus, service was slow. Overall it was great and we will definitely return for brunch.
I wanted so much so like VG for their brunch as their menu looked great online. We went the weekend of festival and the fairmount was organizing a bus tour so I imagine our timing wan't great for our reservation although the restaurant wasn't terribly busy by the time we arrived but it took 40 minutes for our breakfast to arrive. Our server was very nice, but was taking care of too many tables so wasn't checking in on us and what was most frustrating was that they has another server go around with the caesar cart to try and upsell patrons instead of having him just help out with taking care of customers who requested a few times for refills.
I had the omelette with the salad and the salad was served in teeny soup bowl, omelette was fine but not worth the price of the meal. My husband and I ended up having to go for lunch a two hours later as we were still so hungry from brunch. Sorry guys, I don't typically leave negative reviews but I was really unimpressed yesterday.
Lovely fine dining experience, from the moment we were seated until the moment we left.
Service is excellent
Food is fantastic
Top notch fine dining experience
Usually I would say yes. But $300 for 2 people to enjoy a dinner that took almost 3 hours to complete with wine pairings not coming with the meal (one wine pairing was missed completely) and served cold beef Wellington after 2+ hours waiting for the entree is unacceptable. If this wasn’t a CAA-AAA diamond rated restaurant I wouldn’t be so let down but unfortunately that isn’t the case. The staff must not be used to dealing with the amount of people who came in for a good bite to eat. From the tables around us complianing about service and cold food to our own experience being subpar. I wouldn’t rate this place any higher then joeys or earls any more. The Velvet Glove was once my go to restaurant for special occasions. However I wouldn’t step foot in there again if it was even half full. After tip and parking we spent $360 for cold food, poor timed and sometimes missing wine pairings and we got to come home to an unimpressed babysitter for us promising we would be home before 10pm and not getting out of the restaurant until 10:30pm. Be better Velvet Glove, your future depends on it.
For the money we paid I was extremely disappointed. For a three hundred dollar plus meal (for two) every course should be spotted on, and they were not. For instance, we were told that the chef was preparing the beef wellington medium rare (our preference) but I received medium well, my wife well done. Furthermore, the meat was seemingly unseasoned, very flat overall.
Such a huge disappointment as this has been our favorite restaurant for twenty five years. Can't imagine we will return.
The food and service was good, but not worth the money for the four course set menu.
We had a great brunch! Eggs Benedict and Mushrooms on Toast. Ceasear/Bloody Mary cart is great. Service is very fast and friendly!
The service at VG was impeccable. Very friendly and helpful staff.
We had dinner and breakfast and enjoyed both meals. The food and drinks were delicious. The atmosphere was quiet and relaxing. Will definitely go back.
We had the most amazing food experience for dinner with the Chef's Tasting Open Food Table. Every dish was perfect. The BBQ scallop Hot Dog was unbelievable. It played on all your senses smell, texture, taste, visual. The wine pairings with the meal were also so perfect, thank you Carly Durston. If you want a special dinner that you will never forget, I would recommend having the Chef's Daniel Davyduke and Tim Palmer plan a meal for you! Best dinner ever.
Food was very good, but for Groupon I would have preferred the regular menu
The service and food were amazing. The only negative was the wine pairing was a little too generous with portions and that combined with the room temperature made for some dizziness by desert.
It’s a unusual thing to critique but that combination left me a little off by the end of the evening. . . Live and learn :-). I will know for next time to only drink half of what is offered.
That small issue aside it was one of the best meal I’ve had at the Velvet Glove. A perfect way to bring in the new year.
Service is excellent, starting from the courteous hostess to the friendly waitress. We enjoyed the ambience, and the attention to details of the décor, the table settings and the service. We were offered complimentary champagne and desert when the waitress asked us whether it was for a special occasion and we told her it was for our anniversary. The food was delicious and nicely presented. We ordered lamb saddle and Rib Eye steak for our main course. The lamb saddle was perfectly done. The steak was cooked to the correct doneness as well although the cut could be a bit thicker. Overall, it was a very enjoyable dinner from start to finish. I certainly would recommend it to my friends.
Service by Jasmine was exceptional. The entire Christmas supper was delicious.
Waiter was very nice and friendly. The chef was very accommodating for the dietary restrictions that our table had. We went to celebrate a birthday with friends and family.
Zero Christmas decorations on Christmas Eve in the restaurant. Poor ambience. Server was pleasant but not attentive. If restaurant tries to imply it is fine dining it doesn't have servers who can serve fine dining. Would not recommend to anyone for service. By the way the restaurant was perhaps one third full so service cannot be blamed on high capacity.
