The White Hart Ratings and Reviews
Very good pre cinema meal deal. Generous and tasty dishes in a lovely atmosphere. Very courteous staff
Lovely food and great service
Would highly recommend
Service was good. Food was well presented and well cooked. Wines were excellent. However we felt it was very overpriced and thus would only recommend it for special occasions and not everyday dining. We booked a meal as we had cinema tickets.
The White Hart has lost its heart. First the ‘snug’ which was a relaxed seated area ( benches and large tables ) around an open fire got replaced by so many tables and chairs that you can’t see the fire. Also a shame the comfy sofas have gone from the main hall.
Was slightly hesitant on booking a meal as had read some of the reviews. However was more than pleasantly surprised - thought everything about the experience was absolutely fine. Thank you.
Not sure what paleo means?! Everything was exellent, outstanding. It was my dad's birthday and I had been here at Christmas and we both loved it so much I said id treat.him to a 3 course meal on his birthday. The food was fantastic, service exellent as was the ambience. Highly recommended.
Made a nice treat for before the cinema with very friendly and helpful service. Good food.
Would book again.
I have to say that I was thoroughly disappointed. I went for an anniversary meal with my husband as we have previously been there and remembered good things about it but we regretted that decision quite quickly. The staff were pleasant enough but not overly efficient or genuinely friendly. My husband was given the wrong drink and the water we had ordered was totally forgotten. Our starters were ok though his mussels had far too many totally empty shells in it. The fillet steak he had for his main course was the worst piece of over cooked meat we’ve ever eaten, despite him asking for it to be medium rare. My main course was entirely bland and I didn’t want to eat it. It was a total waste of money and I will never be persuaded to go there again.
The Risotto was absolutely wonderful - and the crumble which literally melted in the mouth. I must also mention the serving staff who were helpful, smiling and efficient. Well done White Hart.
Amazing building & lovely waiting staff but let down by very disappointing food which is overpriced for what you get!
The meal deal prior to attending the cinema is such a good idea but sadly food does not live up to expectation!!
Pleasantly quiet and comfortably furnished, food to a good standard but the service was a bit slow and rather gormless
Innovative and interesting menu. Superb vegetarian options
Great food had pre cinema meal that was very good and superbly cooked stone bass
We arrived a bit early but the staff were friendly and accommodating. The food came quickly, our needs were regularly checked (eg for water). The food itself was very good; two of us had mussels, which were delicious, perhaps a little too rich. I had the vegetarian cauliflower dish which had an Ottolenghi dimension, was very flavourful and tasty. The sea bass was fine.
A nice end to our visit to the Barn to see Paddington 2.
Food was delicious and good value if you go for the pre-cinema deal however portion sizes not massive so main menu quite expensive for the portion size. Good servers although the person who served us didn't give us a drinks menu, the man serving behind the bar also ignored us for several minutes even though there was no-one else waiting and he was just chatting to another member of staff. Ambience is quite nice but the draft from both doors was really cold and did make the evening less enjoyable. Would definitely recommend for the pre-cinema meal deal as what you get for that price is good value.
We have eaten at The White Hart many times -- usually early evening before attending a concert/performance at Dartington and we have always been pleased with our experience. On this occasion, we thought the menu was interesting (though not extensive: approx. 4 starters, 6 mains, 4 desserts) and the food was excellent. Delicious celeriac risotto, with local Sharpham cheese. Confit of pear in mille feuille was beautifully presented and offered a wonderfully subtle blend of textures and flavours. The staff served us efficiently and pleasantly: we were in a bit of a hurry because of the show afterwards, so we asked the waitress to move things along briskly, which -- if we nudged them -- they did.
Efficiently served in time for evening concert . Good value for money
Perfect pre-nutcracker meal, thoroughly enjoyed by both of us thank you.
There wasn't a big choice of menu but what we had was very good, the service was excellent. The only down side was the room was on the cold side and at the end of our meal we all felt a bit chilled. We were a bit surprised to have to pay for parking but then it was only £1.
We arrived a bit late and had a show to attend. The staff were amazing. Very attentive and positively divine.
Got our meals very quickly so we weren’t late.
Only thing I would like to point out is if you want to tip take cash
The food was good and the service provided by the waitress excellent. Food prep was slow. Lack of soft furnishings meant the restaurant was noisier than we would have liked. All the staff were very helpful.
The food was authentic and well cooked, better than is to be found in most modern restaurants. Service was prompt, polite and pleasant and we had an excellent evening. Perhaps the dining room was a little too plain and serviceable and could be made more cosy and intimate but this is not a serious criticism.
We all enjoyed our lunch and the care given by your friendly and helpfull staff!
ps good value!!
Pre cinema deal was anything but. Only 2 choices including vegetarian option & they ran out of the meat option within 10 minutes. My partner had to order from the main menu. Also only 2 options for the dessert. All desserts inc the main menu served with ice cream not what everyone wants on a freezing cold winters night. Food itself was fine what we did eat but very overpriced & very poor options. Wouldnt bother again.
Fabulous food and prompt, friendly service. We will definitely be returning.
long waiting for drinks orders arrived and waited 30mins until drinks arrived.
food portion small but tasty and not good value.
summing up in one word : pretentious
Tables rocked, presumably due to uneven floor . Surprise! Wine had to be requested twice.
One item of food order had to be returned under cooked. Service was generally slow.
Bread and olives requested as a starter didn't materialize.
My husband and I enjoyed a pre-film meal, although we decided to choose from the main menu rather than the meal deal (although it looked delicious). Our meals were absolutely wonderful, so tasty and comprising local ingredients. Although we had booked for the bar we decided to eat in the cosy area next to the fire and the ambiance was super.
I would definitely recommend and will myself be dining there again soon.
We went for a Sunday roast. The food was very nice BUT there was hardly any of it. The portion size was so small. One roast potato cut in half, 2 slices of meat, a tiny jug of gravy and a small bowl of veg to share between us. While we were there another couple complained about the small amount of veg and were told if they wanted more they would have to pay for it.
We left there still hungry and went home and ordered a takeaway. Complete waste of money
Really good tasty food with outstanding vegetables. Venison and duck both very well cooked.
Good gluten free bread.
Nice ambience and attentive service.
fabulous food let down just a bit by seating being confined to the outer room. Room and furnishings rather characterless.
When I booked online the only option offered to me was a "high table". I had to phone the White Hart to find out what that was, it could have been a stool at the bar! It was in fact a tall table with tall chairs that had backs to them, a little different from the usual table and chairs and fairly comfortable. We enjoyed the excellent Sunday lunch before a concert in the Hall.
Service slow. Food was cold, one roast had four slices of meat, the other one had one slice of meat. Very very skimpy veg portion. Overall disappointing.
I WOULD GIVE A REVIEW BUT THE WHITE HART IS SHUT ON MONDAYS AND GUEST WHAT ? I BOOKED FOR THE 16TH OF OCT MONDAY WAS NOT HAPPY
We came to eat something nice before a live performance at Dartington, although there ought to have been enough time ( an hour and 5 mins ) we had to wait more than half of that time to be served the 'meal deal' ( please note this sounds so uncouth when going for a special dining experience - it is not mc. donalds is it ?!) Our food was quite good but we were a bit anxious that it would come - and then we really had to scoff our puddings - something I would never normally do in 8 mins which was all we had by the time it did. I did note that some folks near us had only one meal delivered, which the chap had eaten nearly all of before her's arrived and that while someone tried to give us a glass of wine that didn't belong to us, the waiter didn't hear the lady saying it was hers and she had to ask for it again ten mins later - no food or drink ! I would have been mad and I didn't think it reflected well on the service that night ( saturday early eve ) .... sorry to continue, but feedback is just that- at the bar, my partner order a gin - the young barman automatically opened a glass of tonic not asked for, then again at pre order drinks interval ( opera ) his order for whiskey and ginger and mine for a straight ginger ale was misunderstood and only the whiskey and the ginger ale appeared- too hectic to correct ... so wondering if the staff were perhaps rather inexperienced that night ?
I still gave a tip (!)
Very impressed all round..unusual for a restaurant to get it all right!
Possibly the worst service I have ever experienced in a restaurant. Took an hour to bring out one drink. Puddings came in three sittings. Waitress forgot orders. Orders were wrong. Wasn't even busy. A disgrace. Stingy portions as well and some Puddings were not as described on menu.
We thoroughly enjoyed the meal, but found the service a bit slow because there only seemed to be one waitress looking after many tables; this made us 10 minutes late for the cinema. Otherwise, a good evening.
Lovely, great value pre-cinema deal on my partner's birthday. I mentioned his birthday when booking online a month before. I reminded our waitress and she knew all about it. He was served a separate slate of mini macaroons and chocolate dipped strawberries with a piped chocolate message with his ordered sorbet for dessert. He was thrilled and so was I - lovely service and a fun film in the Barn cinema afterwards. Well done and thank you for a special evening.
My sister and I stayed at Dartington Hall for her birthday weekend and our meal at The White Hart was delicious. A lovely menu with locally sourced fare and great service. The 'Happy Birthday' dessert was a lovely touch and much appreciated. We will definitely be back!
