Dull. OK if you want to eat before attending an event at Dartington but not much point making the effort to go there otherwise. The venue has a single toilet for disabled people downstairs, the rest are on the first floor. Diners clearly don't bother to go upstairs, hence when my (disabled) wife used the downstairs toilet there was no toilet paper and empty rolls were scattered on the floor. Staff were asked twice to rectify this; response was" it's not my job". Bit ironic as we were off to see a play at the Space by disabled people. Try walking the talk guys.

The waiting staff were extremely helpful and friendly. However, although on our arrival we were the only clients, the kitchen seemed to be extremely confused. Instead of Pate we received a Duck and Pigeon Terrine - hardly the same thing at all. There was no pate. The raost beef was excellent, tender and pink and plentiful. The Yorkshires etc. were good but I don't understand why the kitchen think it clever to send the meat out sitting on top of the roast potatoes so that they have lost any crispness or crunchiness by the time they reach the table. Why not serve them seperately with the other vegetables. When we asked for more gravy it came in a tiny little jug - a joke really. There was no English mustard in the whole restaurant which is an essential for some. However, there was horseradish. The coffee was good. We just felt that this restaurant felt a little like the place that time had forgotten, it really lacks ambience and attention for diners who are not part of the Dartington Estate events. I doubt that we will go again - such a shame. Good food is really important and it was a decent roast but ambience and a professional staff are part of what we pay for.

Nice and quiet. Small (Sunday) menu but enough choice for various tastes, and some interesting dishes.
Very reasonable prices for food, though wine quite expensive.
Very helpful and friendly service, though not very quick - if the restaurant had been more busy there would not have been enough staff.

We have been eating at the White Hart for seven years, and are disappointed by the reduced menu, especially the limited vegetarian options. The service was slow, but this wasn't the waitress' fault as she was clearly busy the whole time. We asked for bread and olives while we waited for our main course (which we were told would be 20 mins). The bread and olives took 20 minutes to come (after an equally long wait for drinks) and was a pile of olives on a slice of toast with no cocktail sticks... different! The main course, when it eventually arrived, was well cooked, but nothing special. The cutlery is of bad design and unwieldy, and for the last few years I have requested an 'old' knife and fork, because the new ones are so hard to handle. Five years ago The White Hart was a venue for special occasions, with creative, locally sourced food. Now it's run of the mill, and we would only eat there if other favourite venues were booked.

Outside seating area:
Tables not cleaned after removal of trays
Trays left too long before removal, encouraging ‘wasps’ to cause extreme nuisance to customers and staff
Glass not swept up following a breakage under table
Steak knives should be made available in restaurant

Overall lovely restaurant venue for a pre/post cinema experience, good food and service 👍

Had to ask for cinema menu 3 times, when it came there were 2 choices but one had 3 portions left.Had 20 mins to eat meal before cinema started despite being there 1.5 hrs before and had to take desert into cinema with us! Staff apologetic but needs to be better organised as a system!! Food lovely when it arrived! But felt very rushed and not a relaxed evening .

Amazing setting, interesting short menu (4 or 5 starters & same for main which I take as a good sign), the food was very tasty, well presented. Only compliant was the service, we were served by four different staff who were not working together as a team and dashing from table to table to kitchen & back which ruined any atmosphere and our table service (being asked multiple times if we had chosen, ordered, wanted water etc).

Went for a meal before the cinema. I had a starter fishcake with sauteed potatoes and salad. The fishcake was miniscule; the smallest I have ever been served or even seen. The Aioli it came with was nice, the salad and sauteed potatoes were fine. My partner had mussels which he described as overcooked and lukewarm. I advised him to send them back, but he was too hungry. The staff were ok; a bit distracted and indifferent. Over all experience was disappointing. If we need to eat before going to the Barn cinema again, we'll leave earlier and go to somewhere in Totnes.

We went here as a pre cinema treat, and should have read the reviews first. The pub was very quiet, and did'nt feel particularly welcoming, although the building is beautiful.

Our meal arrived in good time, but the vegetarian meal was very poor (small, not as described, and not well dressed). A comment to the waitress brought an apology but no other action.

The pork meal as nice and well prepared, but small. I would have expected potatoes to be included at the price charged, but these were an extra.

I would suggest you find somewhere else to eat in totnes. As a place to have a drink and a packet of crisps, its a lovely location, and Im sure would be fine

This pub come restaurant is within the grounds of the hall but seems to be open to all. Food was excellent, wine list small but OK. Real ale served also. As its a pub pre meal drinks were taken outside in the lovely grounds and gardens. A very good experience.

We booked on-line for the Cinema Meal Deal. On arrival, it wasn't known that we'd booked for the meal deal. We were given a verbal option of 2 choices. I had Sea Bass & my husband had pea risotto. Both meals were poor. My fish was very salty, the risotto a green mush! Ice cream for pudding - although tasted OK, the portion size was an insult! Really poor food & poor value for money. If you can't manage to serve up an appetising & filling meal for £15, then don't offer the deal. I have not had such a poor meal for years. I certainly will not be coming back unless there are vast improvements.

Pre cinema set price meal for £15 fairly good value. Only two choices of main and desert. Salmon and vegetarian, so meat eaters might be upset. As far as I know this set menu is not posted on the website so you have no prior knowledge. Food was tasty although quite small portions and definitely too many saute potatoes.....a really huge mound which was unnecessary

The staff were very overstretched. we waited a long time to get the menus have our orders taken and It took more than an hour for our food to come after arriving and then it was the wrong meal! Everyone was courteous and apologetic and they took money off our bill, but please, can the managers/bosses please put more staff on to make the eating experience more relaxed and enjoyable.

Shame there was no vegan option. Chef made a risotto but it was bland. Vegetarian 1 option - pie was unpleasant and served with an odd choice of raw kol rabi and parsley salad. Meat dishes had much better feedback.

Pickle starters were fantastic.

Service was grumpy. Wine wasn’t brought over. Glasses weren’t brought over. Not warm or welcoming. Embarrassing as I had 6 guests visiting for the first time.

I always recommend the White Hart bc of location and setting but it is inconsistent. There is no excuse for rude service.

The White Hart failed to notify OpenTable that the normal a la carte menu was not available for the evening I booked. The choice was a cold 'Open House' buffet for £10. We ate, instead, at the Cott Inn, Dartington (very nice).

Not a good experience. We were not told about the community event, and this reduced over menu options considerably. The soup was cold and the been salad very salty. Our friends had the pie which was dry and unappetising., with few vegetables. The fire had not been lit, and it looked as if standards had been allowed to drop. The cutlery is difficult to manage as it twists in ones grip.
A wonderful venue which needs new management, and a more creative chef who can handle what should be quite an interesting experience.
Please try to get things sorted before you lose the attraction of such a fantastic venue.

David Ferguson.

We had an excellent meal the night before in the restaurant but we were less thrilled with the Sunday lunch. The meat portions were meagre, just three small slices of pork and one of our party had a lot of fat on hers. The amount of gravy was minuscule and we had to ask for more gravy twice as the amount they brought was in a tiny jug. The vegetables were very good. If we’d had more meat, potatoes and gravy, I would have given more stars.

I had booked a table well in advance but on showing up on Friday night (23rd Feb) to ask about our table, was waved offhandedly into the bar by a young lady saying 'some of them are in there' - no friendly welcome or a smile. When we came to take up our table there was no interest in us at all - we ended up just sitting at the table that had my name on it as the person who had reserved it. No one came to see if we wanted any drinks at all. We found the main course choices on the menu odd & not one of the 5 of us found anything that appealed. We therefore had 3 bowls of chips (sides only) & 2 of us had starters - we all had puddings as we were hungry. The older waitress with short hair & glasses on duty that night was not in the least bit friendly & seemed horrified we weren't ordering main courses. We did explain that we thought the menu odd, but in a lighthearted way. We waited a long time for the food & after this had to ask for dessert menus. The young blond waitress who eventually came to take our order (the same lady I had seen on entering the restaurant initially) merely said 'does anybody want anything?', without cracking as much as a smile, let alone a smidge of anything nearing customer service. The atmosphere in the restaurant was bleak & most unwelcoming. A pity as our group of 5 often come to see films at The Barn & this was our first experience of trying the White Hart (which is a very attractive room) for food first, as our film was at 8 p.m. As time wore on we were concerned we might even be late going in for our film. Sadly, we all agreed we couldn't recommend the service or menu to anyone we knew & did not leave a tip. Our experience therefore was extremely disappointing & left a bit of a bad taste.

The White Hart has lost its heart. First the ‘snug’ which was a relaxed seated area ( benches and large tables ) around an open fire got replaced by so many tables and chairs that you can’t see the fire. Also a shame the comfy sofas have gone from the main hall.

I have to say that I was thoroughly disappointed. I went for an anniversary meal with my husband as we have previously been there and remembered good things about it but we regretted that decision quite quickly. The staff were pleasant enough but not overly efficient or genuinely friendly. My husband was given the wrong drink and the water we had ordered was totally forgotten. Our starters were ok though his mussels had far too many totally empty shells in it. The fillet steak he had for his main course was the worst piece of over cooked meat we’ve ever eaten, despite him asking for it to be medium rare. My main course was entirely bland and I didn’t want to eat it. It was a total waste of money and I will never be persuaded to go there again.

We arrived a bit early but the staff were friendly and accommodating. The food came quickly, our needs were regularly checked (eg for water). The food itself was very good; two of us had mussels, which were delicious, perhaps a little too rich. I had the vegetarian cauliflower dish which had an Ottolenghi dimension, was very flavourful and tasty. The sea bass was fine.
A nice end to our visit to the Barn to see Paddington 2.

Food was delicious and good value if you go for the pre-cinema deal however portion sizes not massive so main menu quite expensive for the portion size. Good servers although the person who served us didn't give us a drinks menu, the man serving behind the bar also ignored us for several minutes even though there was no-one else waiting and he was just chatting to another member of staff. Ambience is quite nice but the draft from both doors was really cold and did make the evening less enjoyable. Would definitely recommend for the pre-cinema meal deal as what you get for that price is good value.
