We had a lovely evening meal here, great atmosphere, food and service. Would definitely come again and recommend it, the restaurant and surroundings were ideal, a great way to round off our holiday in Dartington.
We went here as a pre cinema treat, and should have read the reviews first. The pub was very quiet, and did'nt feel particularly welcoming, although the building is beautiful.
Our meal arrived in good time, but the vegetarian meal was very poor (small, not as described, and not well dressed). A comment to the waitress brought an apology but no other action.
The pork meal as nice and well prepared, but small. I would have expected potatoes to be included at the price charged, but these were an extra.
I would suggest you find somewhere else to eat in totnes. As a place to have a drink and a packet of crisps, its a lovely location, and Im sure would be fine
The Pre-Cinema "special" was pan fried trout filet. Very nice. Finished off with sticky toffee pudding and honey comb ice cream. All washed down with Pinot Grigio. Delightful!
This pub come restaurant is within the grounds of the hall but seems to be open to all. Food was excellent, wine list small but OK. Real ale served also. As its a pub pre meal drinks were taken outside in the lovely grounds and gardens. A very good experience.
We booked on-line for the Cinema Meal Deal. On arrival, it wasn't known that we'd booked for the meal deal. We were given a verbal option of 2 choices. I had Sea Bass & my husband had pea risotto. Both meals were poor. My fish was very salty, the risotto a green mush! Ice cream for pudding - although tasted OK, the portion size was an insult! Really poor food & poor value for money. If you can't manage to serve up an appetising & filling meal for £15, then don't offer the deal. I have not had such a poor meal for years. I certainly will not be coming back unless there are vast improvements.
We really enjoyed our meal and the service was very good.
Good food, well prepared and great service. Menu was small but changes every day. Good location and very cosy next to the fireplace.
Pre cinema set price meal for £15 fairly good value. Only two choices of main and desert. Salmon and vegetarian, so meat eaters might be upset. As far as I know this set menu is not posted on the website so you have no prior knowledge. Food was tasty although quite small portions and definitely too many saute potatoes.....a really huge mound which was unnecessary
The staff were very overstretched. we waited a long time to get the menus have our orders taken and It took more than an hour for our food to come after arriving and then it was the wrong meal! Everyone was courteous and apologetic and they took money off our bill, but please, can the managers/bosses please put more staff on to make the eating experience more relaxed and enjoyable.
Shame there was no vegan option. Chef made a risotto but it was bland. Vegetarian 1 option - pie was unpleasant and served with an odd choice of raw kol rabi and parsley salad. Meat dishes had much better feedback.
Pickle starters were fantastic.
Service was grumpy. Wine wasn’t brought over. Glasses weren’t brought over. Not warm or welcoming. Embarrassing as I had 6 guests visiting for the first time.
I always recommend the White Hart bc of location and setting but it is inconsistent. There is no excuse for rude service.
The White Hart failed to notify OpenTable that the normal a la carte menu was not available for the evening I booked. The choice was a cold 'Open House' buffet for £10. We ate, instead, at the Cott Inn, Dartington (very nice).
Not a good experience. We were not told about the community event, and this reduced over menu options considerably. The soup was cold and the been salad very salty. Our friends had the pie which was dry and unappetising., with few vegetables. The fire had not been lit, and it looked as if standards had been allowed to drop. The cutlery is difficult to manage as it twists in ones grip.
A wonderful venue which needs new management, and a more creative chef who can handle what should be quite an interesting experience.
Please try to get things sorted before you lose the attraction of such a fantastic venue.
(We lunched on Friday 9th March).
We had an excellent meal the night before in the restaurant but we were less thrilled with the Sunday lunch. The meat portions were meagre, just three small slices of pork and one of our party had a lot of fat on hers. The amount of gravy was minuscule and we had to ask for more gravy twice as the amount they brought was in a tiny jug. The vegetables were very good. If we’d had more meat, potatoes and gravy, I would have given more stars.
I had booked a table well in advance but on showing up on Friday night (23rd Feb) to ask about our table, was waved offhandedly into the bar by a young lady saying 'some of them are in there' - no friendly welcome or a smile. When we came to take up our table there was no interest in us at all - we ended up just sitting at the table that had my name on it as the person who had reserved it. No one came to see if we wanted any drinks at all. We found the main course choices on the menu odd & not one of the 5 of us found anything that appealed. We therefore had 3 bowls of chips (sides only) & 2 of us had starters - we all had puddings as we were hungry. The older waitress with short hair & glasses on duty that night was not in the least bit friendly & seemed horrified we weren't ordering main courses. We did explain that we thought the menu odd, but in a lighthearted way. We waited a long time for the food & after this had to ask for dessert menus. The young blond waitress who eventually came to take our order (the same lady I had seen on entering the restaurant initially) merely said 'does anybody want anything?', without cracking as much as a smile, let alone a smidge of anything nearing customer service. The atmosphere in the restaurant was bleak & most unwelcoming. A pity as our group of 5 often come to see films at The Barn & this was our first experience of trying the White Hart (which is a very attractive room) for food first, as our film was at 8 p.m. As time wore on we were concerned we might even be late going in for our film. Sadly, we all agreed we couldn't recommend the service or menu to anyone we knew & did not leave a tip. Our experience therefore was extremely disappointing & left a bit of a bad taste.
Very good pre cinema meal deal. Generous and tasty dishes in a lovely atmosphere. Very courteous staff
Lovely food and great service
Would highly recommend
Service was good. Food was well presented and well cooked. Wines were excellent. However we felt it was very overpriced and thus would only recommend it for special occasions and not everyday dining. We booked a meal as we had cinema tickets.
The White Hart has lost its heart. First the ‘snug’ which was a relaxed seated area ( benches and large tables ) around an open fire got replaced by so many tables and chairs that you can’t see the fire. Also a shame the comfy sofas have gone from the main hall.
Was slightly hesitant on booking a meal as had read some of the reviews. However was more than pleasantly surprised - thought everything about the experience was absolutely fine. Thank you.
Not sure what paleo means?! Everything was exellent, outstanding. It was my dad's birthday and I had been here at Christmas and we both loved it so much I said id treat.him to a 3 course meal on his birthday. The food was fantastic, service exellent as was the ambience. Highly recommended.
Made a nice treat for before the cinema with very friendly and helpful service. Good food.
Would book again.
I have to say that I was thoroughly disappointed. I went for an anniversary meal with my husband as we have previously been there and remembered good things about it but we regretted that decision quite quickly. The staff were pleasant enough but not overly efficient or genuinely friendly. My husband was given the wrong drink and the water we had ordered was totally forgotten. Our starters were ok though his mussels had far too many totally empty shells in it. The fillet steak he had for his main course was the worst piece of over cooked meat we’ve ever eaten, despite him asking for it to be medium rare. My main course was entirely bland and I didn’t want to eat it. It was a total waste of money and I will never be persuaded to go there again.
The Risotto was absolutely wonderful - and the crumble which literally melted in the mouth. I must also mention the serving staff who were helpful, smiling and efficient. Well done White Hart.
Amazing building & lovely waiting staff but let down by very disappointing food which is overpriced for what you get!
The meal deal prior to attending the cinema is such a good idea but sadly food does not live up to expectation!!
Pleasantly quiet and comfortably furnished, food to a good standard but the service was a bit slow and rather gormless
Innovative and interesting menu. Superb vegetarian options
Great food had pre cinema meal that was very good and superbly cooked stone bass
We arrived a bit early but the staff were friendly and accommodating. The food came quickly, our needs were regularly checked (eg for water). The food itself was very good; two of us had mussels, which were delicious, perhaps a little too rich. I had the vegetarian cauliflower dish which had an Ottolenghi dimension, was very flavourful and tasty. The sea bass was fine.
A nice end to our visit to the Barn to see Paddington 2.
Food was delicious and good value if you go for the pre-cinema deal however portion sizes not massive so main menu quite expensive for the portion size. Good servers although the person who served us didn't give us a drinks menu, the man serving behind the bar also ignored us for several minutes even though there was no-one else waiting and he was just chatting to another member of staff. Ambience is quite nice but the draft from both doors was really cold and did make the evening less enjoyable. Would definitely recommend for the pre-cinema meal deal as what you get for that price is good value.
We have eaten at The White Hart many times -- usually early evening before attending a concert/performance at Dartington and we have always been pleased with our experience. On this occasion, we thought the menu was interesting (though not extensive: approx. 4 starters, 6 mains, 4 desserts) and the food was excellent. Delicious celeriac risotto, with local Sharpham cheese. Confit of pear in mille feuille was beautifully presented and offered a wonderfully subtle blend of textures and flavours. The staff served us efficiently and pleasantly: we were in a bit of a hurry because of the show afterwards, so we asked the waitress to move things along briskly, which -- if we nudged them -- they did.
Efficiently served in time for evening concert . Good value for money
Perfect pre-nutcracker meal, thoroughly enjoyed by both of us thank you.
There wasn't a big choice of menu but what we had was very good, the service was excellent. The only down side was the room was on the cold side and at the end of our meal we all felt a bit chilled. We were a bit surprised to have to pay for parking but then it was only £1.
We arrived a bit late and had a show to attend. The staff were amazing. Very attentive and positively divine.
Got our meals very quickly so we weren’t late.
Only thing I would like to point out is if you want to tip take cash
The food was good and the service provided by the waitress excellent. Food prep was slow. Lack of soft furnishings meant the restaurant was noisier than we would have liked. All the staff were very helpful.
The food was authentic and well cooked, better than is to be found in most modern restaurants. Service was prompt, polite and pleasant and we had an excellent evening. Perhaps the dining room was a little too plain and serviceable and could be made more cosy and intimate but this is not a serious criticism.
We all enjoyed our lunch and the care given by your friendly and helpfull staff!
ps good value!!
Pre cinema deal was anything but. Only 2 choices including vegetarian option & they ran out of the meat option within 10 minutes. My partner had to order from the main menu. Also only 2 options for the dessert. All desserts inc the main menu served with ice cream not what everyone wants on a freezing cold winters night. Food itself was fine what we did eat but very overpriced & very poor options. Wouldnt bother again.
Fabulous food and prompt, friendly service. We will definitely be returning.
long waiting for drinks orders arrived and waited 30mins until drinks arrived.
food portion small but tasty and not good value.
summing up in one word : pretentious
