Exhaustive list of Italian classics that are very good
My friend and I had planned on dining at Vago on a Sunday evening for a nice final dinner at the end of our trip to Montreal. We made our reservation for 9:30pm on open table, and upon walking in and telling the man behind the host desk (who we later discovered was the GM) our name, he exaggeratedly looked at his watch and said “yeah... for 9 o’clock” and took us to our table. After double checking my confirmation email and the open table app, I apologized for being late (we walked in at 9:34) but reemphasized that our reservation was for 9:30. The GM rolled his eyes and walked away. We then attempted to order a bottle of wine with our server (who was incredibly nice and understanding) but it was out of stock, as was the next bottle we requested, and any he said he would usually recommend. The GM came over and told us “The kitchen is closing in 15 minutes. If you want to order something, you should do it now” in an incredibly snarky tone after we had been seated for maybe 3 minutes. I work in a restaurant. I understand that everyone working in the kitchen wants to go clean up and go home when the restaurant closes. What I don’t understand is why they would take a 9:30 reservation if the kitchen closes at 9:45, or why the GM had to be so rude about it. I decided just to stick with a glass of wine, but my friend ordered the pasta primavera and asked to add shrimp. The food was ehh, but the bill came and her meal (a bowl of spaghetti with marinara sauce and three shrimp as well as a glass of wine) was $65. She asked the GM how it added up to so much. He responded “3 shrimp? $20.” I have never felt so unwelcome and been treated so rudely in a restaurant. After a wonderful trip in Montreal where we ate at tons of fantastic restaurants, this place was pretty awful. Would not recommend to anyone.
Excellent cuisine. Very generous linguine pescatore, but delicious. Helpful waitress. Atmosphere a bit too chilly for my taste, but my wife liked it
We had our usual items and they were consistently good. The chop salad, the eggplant parmesan and the veal limone were all satisfying as was the polished and efficient service. This is one of our favorite neighborhood restaurants.
Amazing place! Spent our New Year’s Eve there with friends and everything exceeded our expectations. The Food was amazing, so flavourful. Thank you to Tommaso and the whole staff for the lovely hospitality!
I can't believe I haven't heard of this place as it has been open for 18 years! Delightful service and great ambiance. The food was exceptional specifically the lamb which was outstanding.
Look forward to going again!
Vago is consistently great food/service/ambiance! I try to go as often as possible
Le service en français un peu difficile aujourd'hui
Potato and leak soup as a starter - very good. My wife had the tomatoe/mozza; quebecois mozza was very good, quite a surprise! For the main, had à Milanese “escalope” which well crafted. Crème brûle for dessert, outstanding. My wife had the chocolate profiteroles, which were underwhelming. Had an inexperienced waiter (didn’t ask if we wanted wine, took dishes away too soon) who was more than compensated by the head waiter’s professionalism. Reasonable bill for 2 drinks + 2 starters + 2 mains + 2 desserts + 2 coffees (158$ + tip)
Hadn't been to Vago for years.. it is updated and quite a cool space now. Service was good, food was well prepared, but a bit heavy on the garlic everywhere. What is missing is some attention from the maitre d' who was immersed in his phone all night.. not on the floor checking that all is up-to-snuff.
Quality and flavour of food is amazing highly recommend
Hadn't been to Vago in many years but very pleased overall. The Vago salad, the veal limone and the eggplant parmesan were all excellent and wine prices by the glass were reasonable. The only negative was the noise level. Conversations around us were loud and the music added to the noise. If we had been with another couple, conversation would have been difficult.
Some of the worst service we have ever experienced. The bottle of wine we ordered, was sold out, so the manager brought out a cheap suggestion. We asked to see one of the other wines, which he proceeded to say "It's a lot more money", almost implying we could not afford it. We ended up choosing the expensive one which was opened left on the table, to air! Not even decanter! The manager never can back, we were not poured a sampler or even a glass of it. We had to pour it for ourselves the entire meal. The server had no idea about the meals. She could not even tell me what type of pasta was in the meals, and did not even attempt to go to the kitchen and find out. We poured our own water, and they kept trying to rush us the entire meal. It is supposed to be a traditional Italian restaurant but again the server or manager did not know what grappa with espresso was. When we had finished our desert, they had all disappeared. From rushing to ignoring.
We never worry about spending over $300 on a meal, but we do expect at least some service!
We will never go back!
Vago is an exceptional restaurant; parking was easy; ambiance was great and the food was exceptional; I had the seafood Pasta; mom had the Veal Limonde and Donna had the suggestion du Cheff which was a pasta; we also had the soup which was delicious; some Reisling and some Pinot Grigio........ Big thanks for the awesome service on my mom's birthday !
RICHARD LABERGE, cpa, cma
The service was very slow for some reason
Food was delicious as usual! We ate outside - so noise level was moderate. It was a great lunch!
Service HORRIBLE. NOISE LEVWL IMPOSSIBLE
Tasty Italian food that we all enjoyed. Service prompt and attentive. Would recommend and return.
The wait staff was so nice and considerate. Thank you
Excellent service, la nourriture était à la hauteur de nos attentes.
Le seul point négatif, les lumières sont trop forte, ça gâche l'ambiance.
All went as planned..food, service, atmosphere.
As expected
This restaurant has it all--great food (authentic Italian), nice ambience and terrific service. I have seldom encountered a more attentive and truly interested server than Chris. The veal parm was wonderful, not heavy, perfectly crisp. The flourless chocolate cake was perfect. My wife loved the oysters and the eggplant parmesan. Definitely try this one!
We visit Montreal semi-regularly. Love to entertain friends and family at Vago who enjoy the excellent ambience, service and of course the delicious food.
The food and service were very good. I highly recommend this restaurant- Vago.
Birthday cake was a nice treat!
Thanks
Fabulous food, great atmosphere and wonderful service !
Ordered fish of the day. No flavor at all accompanied with a few vegetables which were greasy. Service was very poor waiter difficult to find in this fairly small restaurant. Would not return. Many better choices in a city filled with great Italian restaurants.
One complaint I don’t like garlic asked waiter if my veal had garlic and he said no. Sure enough full of garlic so neither my husband nor I really enjoyed our meal
Great meal.
Et toujours le service super attentionné de Nicolai!!
Excellent food service , great neighbourhood restaurant.
Delicious food and attentive service, wine is fairly priced. Overall an enjoyable experience.
I LOVE this place! It is going to be my new favourite in the Westmount area. We decided to be seated at the bar and were taken care of by the owner/manager who was entertaining, attentive and funny! We started with the Truffle Garlic Bread that sent me to heaven! So melted in my mouth. This tasty appetizer was followed up by Butternut Squash Soup that was creamy and rich. We couldn't resist another order of the Garlic Bread. The bar keep surprised me by ordering my entree! I love how he took initiative, listened to my likes in passing and was confident in the restaurant's offerings. He was right on the money with my Eggplant Parmesan. It was really good, and am usually not a fan, but I am changing my opinion! Lastly, the Dirty Martini was just perfect! You have to visit this establishment for the service (amazing) and the ambiance (low lights and chic) but the food is the true STAR
Always good, friendly staff.
The portions are big. Quiet restaurant that allows for good conversation.
First waiter was very rushed and rude. Set tone for entire multi hundred dollar evening. Will never return.
Great food, great ambience. Was seated near the kitchen which wasn’t the best. Service was impeccable.
Food was fantastic. Great atmosphere. We’ll be back.
Vago is outstanding! Food and Service both get a 10 on 10 every time!
Never disappointing, food always on point!!
