The water they served was not remotely cold, we were told that they had no olives for a martini, and the temperature in the restaurant was so warm that someone who was always cold, was able to take her jacket off. This restaurant has really fallen far from previous heights I wouldn’t go again, and the service was very poor.

We had the Indian Chinese thali for just $35! Such a great value. We got a chance to try everything we wanted on one plate for a great price. The dish had great flavors. We will definitely come back.

Awful! Getting ready to close? Stack of dishes brought to table for sharing- had 3 dimensional food on them. Waiters welcomed us then went out of the way to ignore us—short staffed. Out of two dishes we ordered -told us after they brought the other dishes. Didn’t offer an alternative. Had guests from OOT-totally embarrassed. Embarrassed for owner. 1 1little candle for table for 10. DR looks abandoned.

I had such high hopes for our visit to this restaurant and had reviewed the menu at least six times. Overall it was a lackluster experience for our group of 6 that we’re celebrating two birthdays that were never acknowledged. It seemed as if the owners were busy and left the restaurant in the hands of their 20 something relatives. Their lack of experience was evident. We ordered caparinas that were poorly made. Two of the group ordered wine from the menu that they didn’t have. They started us with Masala fries that were on cute bicycles. Our fried rice were kids portions and lacked flavor, the crispy noodles were okay, the crispy chicken was not crispy and it didn’t look appetizing. Our entrees looked as if they were prepared by someone who lacked experience in food preparation and presentation. My lobster was over cooked and the seemed fish was overcooked also. We were over it and didn’t order dessert.

Always a great spot to eat when you travel to Chicago! The old menu was absolutely phenomenal, the new twist on India-Chinese menu is good! Add a tasting option , we ordered an extra meal so we could try more! Looks like we need another trip to Chicago to try other dishes.

The food was an innovative spin on the classic Hakka indo-Chinese that originated in Kolkata, India. The presentation and the flavors were really good. However the servers made us feel rushed and were not attentive where they needed to be (did not check to see that our water glasses were full). The ambiance was spoiled by a large family group with screaming children reminiscent of a Chucky Cheese and parents who couldn’t care less about their own obnoxious behavior. Maybe, that was bad luck on our part. The chairs swill remind you of Spirit airlines basic economy seats in terms of comfort. I wish they had retained the previous iteration of the decor.

Food is really subpar…definitely not worth the price. Entrées all taste the same…spicy with all the same veggies (onions and peppers) and the side order of green beans on the menu is super random; they are terribly sour and am not really sure constitutes as “indo-Chinese”. Overal a very underwhelming experience for a place we came to celebrate a special moment. Would not recommend the food or cocktails here. Sad as this place could have potential.

This is our 3rd chance to give to Vermillion. And yet again, we're disappointed. Although the service was great, the food wasn't the best. The menu was slightly different than what is shown online. The food didn't seem fresh at all - everything came out minutes after we ordered. And the fried rice/noodles, we've had better at the mall - fresher at the mall! The drinks, if you order without ice, you only get half a glass but the charge is full price (and that's a non-alcoholic drink!). The food was either spicy or sweet, nothing in the middle to provide a balance. With the weather being so hot, the AC didn't seem to be working, as it seemed cooler outside the restaurant! And as nice and attentive as the server was, he was in a t-shirt and a baseball hat. If we're going out to eat at a NICE downtown place, we don't expect the staff to be dressed so casually. Very disappointed!

I had a delightful experience at Vermillion last week with a colleague. The restaurant is conveniently located on Hubbard Street in River North. The place is dimly lit, cosy & relatively quiet, which feels as if you've discovered a hidden gem tucked between the clubs & lounges that line the street. The menu is divided into cool, crisp, mains & side kicks, with each item having a fun, playful title. We ordered items from several categories, which were all easy to share. The "Kolkata Streets" consisted of tangra crisp noodle chaat, jhal muri, mango, cilantro & Chinese chili sauce. It was sweet & tangy, with quite a kick (warning to those who don't like spicy), with an enjoyable crunch from the noodles. A great way to start the meal, but also a great side to accompany other dishes. We also started with the Wok of Life Shrimp, which was one of my favorites of the night. Cantonese shrimp with sweet, charred tandoor pineapple on a toasted lobster roll bun. The ambrosia dipping sauce added bright, light & creamy acidity to balance out the savory shrimp. For mains, I decided to go for a classic - Hakka Chow Mein with chicken & eggs, which definitely hit the spot. My colleague ordered Squid Games, partly because he loved the description with "lethal black squid ink rice noodles" and also because he is Italian, so he loves squid ink pasta. It included shrimp, squid, black mushrooms & squid ink sauce. I tasted this as well and it was delicious. He finished the plate quite quickly, even though it was a substantial portion, so it was clear he loved it. We also enjoyed a side of fries with a special sauce that was a nice change from ketchup. For dessert, we had the Regal Shahi Tukra which was a dense nut cake resting in a pool of creamy saffron milk. I ordered the Bollywood Item Number cocktail with voka, pear, green chili & lime. A touch of fruit, spice and acid perfectly complimented the food. Our server was friendly, attentive & provided great recommendations!

We have been to Vermilion many many times and we have always enjoyed it. We are big fans of the owner and her Let's Talk Womxn series. Unfortunately, I cannot provide a positive review of our meal yesterday. The new menu is confusing- not all items were in stock. The masala rice was so dry I wondered if it was made last week. The squid ink pasta was tastless and the shrimp was sparse. The lobster dish lacked lobster. There were no wines by the glass that reflected nor complimented the cusine.

I really enjoyed the drink menu! The LSD was recommended to me by the bartender as I voiced out my preference of an herbal drink and it was absolutely spot on. I paired it with a not your KFC and a tangra masala rice. I look forward to coming here again and trying out the squid games.

The food at Vermillion was not even close to the food we had in the same restaurant exactly one year ago. Currently, the drinks were extremely overpriced and quality was absolutely below grade. Seemed like the server cooked as well as served. The taste of the food was not tasty at all. I would not go back to this restaurant and neither will I recommend anyone.
