About this restaurant

  • Neighbourhood gem
  • Lively
  • Innovative
In August 2024, Michelin & James Beard-recognized Chef Ricardo Zarate opened The Hummingbird Ceviche House featuring the Nikkei (Japanese-Peruvian) cuisine he’s best known for. In a charming space with a turquoise-quartz bar, The Hummingbird serves an irresistible bill of fare focused on fresh seafood prepared using Nikkei techniques elevated by California influences. The L.A. Times' Laurie Ochoa wrote: "...the service is caring and the food, including an aji amarillo hummus flatbread and sesame-leaf shrimp dumplings with tiger's milk aioli, is inventive and delicious. And...the Hummingbird is affordable." Diners delight in Nikkei hand rolls, delectable ceviches, small bites, hot dishes, desserts and house-made drinks. The Hummingbird was named one of The Infatuation LA's "Best Restaurants of 2024." NEW: Talented local musicians often stop by to perform on Tuesdays, and Saturdays. Close to Dodger Stadium and perfect for pre-game bites.

You'll drive by it and not see it. There's no parking. It's not in the best neighborhood. Now that we've gotten those out of the way, go to the Hummingbird! The service is great and the food (ceviche) is even better. It was my first time and I'll be back. And don't forget to order a pie for dessert - divine!

Everything we ordered was super delicious. Every single dish had its own specific taste with different species and seafood was very fresh . Value was great for the food, the manager was very welcoming and nice to talk too. Definitely will go back

Food was great. As expected with anything Zarate does. Staff was nice but service was not great. Especially considering I dined solo at the bar at 6:30 and ordered their version of an “omakase”. Courses were slow. 2 times over 6 courses I was forgotten about and the server had to remind the kitchen. And Chef was there so I expected it to be tighter. I wasn’t in a rush but disappointed in service. But I’ll be back because food is excellent

This is our fifth time back and we have never been disappointed. The food is creative, fresh, and bursting with flavor. The vibe is unpretentious and fun. An added bonus on Saturdays is the singer/pianist, both of whom are talented and engaging. Can't wait to go back and try the "Omakasi".

We absolutely loved our experience here. Marc was a fantastic host and his playlist is absolutely amazing. They really care for their customers and are extremely friendly and welcoming. The food is incredible! Flavors bursting in every bite. The ceviche mixto was a favorite. Shrimp dumplings is an absolute must! We could have had several orders of the spicy crab crispy crispy rice. Scallop & crab hand rolls were a great way to start our meal. We finished with the lomo saltdado and loved it! Don't sleep on the freshly baked pies. We both the blueberry & apple pies with ice cream and freshly made whipped cream. We loved this place and will be back very soon. Highly recommend!

The flavors, textures, presentation, and service were all very good. The quality of the food was outstanding, and I loved that most of the food is naturally gluten-free with no issues with cross-contact for us Celiac people. My only complaints are that the portions were too small for the price (can be justified given that the chef is a Michelin-star chef), the parking was difficult (but it's LA), and it didn't feel very authentic. I know it is supposed to be Peruvian-Japanese Fusion, but things like using feta (greek) instead of queso fresco for the salsa huancaina, serving funky-tasting tostadas (no idea what they put in them, but it wasn't traditional corn used in Mexican cuisine, and Peruvians don't use any corn tortillas in their food) with the ceviche, and putting hardly any rice (a staple for Japanese and Peruvian cuisine) in the ARROZ chaufa were completely out of left field. The chicha morada and maracuya tasted different than normal and had chia seeds in it, which is very unusual, but not bad. Again, the food was good, but I had to not think of it as Peruvian food. It was more like it had Peruvian influence by using their chilis and spices.
